PIHS swimmers conclude season

    BRUNSWICK — It’s out of the pool for high school swimmers in Presque Isle as the season has concluded with the State Class B meet held Feb. 20-21 at Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

    The Wildcat boys placed 16th and the girls finished 18th.

    In the 200-yard individual medley, the Presque Isle boys placed 12th in the state and in doing so set a school record. Isaac Estey, Alex Hemphill, Nate DeWitt and Keegan Ennis swam the preliminary heat in a time of 2:00.47 minutes.

    Here’s a recap of how Presque Isle swimmers fared in other events (unless indicated results are from the final heats):

    50-yard freestyle: 4th, DeWitt; and 35th, Hemphill.

    100-yard butterfly: 6th, Estey; and 13th, DeWitt.

    200-yard freestyle relay: 12th in prelim, Estey, DeWitt, Hemphill and Ennis; 16th, Hemphill, Joshua Jones, David Cyr and DeWitt.

    100-yard breaststroke: 13th, Estey.

    400-yard freestyle relay: 13th in prelim, Cyr, Jones, Hemphill and Dustin Drabek.

    For the Presque Isle girls, Grace Short finished 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke and also set a school record in the process. Her time in the preliminary heat was 1:19.54 minutes.

    Recapping the other girls’ results (unless indicated results are from the final heats):

    200-yard individual medley: 15th in prelim, Erica Hemphill, Grace Short, Erikka Murley and Sarah McEachern; 16th, McEachern, Murley, Short and Mary Mitchell.

    200-yard individual medley: 19th in prelim, Murley.

    100-yard butterfly: 19th in prelim, Murley.

    100-yard freestyle: 9th, Hemphill.

    50-yard freestyle: 7th, Hemphill.

    200-yard freestyle relay: 17th in prelim, Murley, Hemphill, Short and McEachern.

    400-yard freestyle relay: 20th in prelim, Mitchell, Sara Gilson, McEachern and Emma Michalowski.

    Hemphill also received recognition for making the Penobscot Valley Conference All-Star Swim Team in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle.
