TOPS ME 0233, HOULTON
by Lois Downing
Take Off Pounds Sensibly Chapter 0233 of Houlton met at the Aldergate building on High Street for its Friday, Feb. 24, meeting. Because of the icy weather, only 11 members attended including two KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly).
Leader Denise Clark led the meeting and spoke on events around the month of February. Because of election next week, several nominations were given to fill the vacancies: leader, co-leader, secretary and treasurer.
Secretary Charlotte Marley gave her minutes for the last meeting. She also distributed Valentine cups for those who were absent for the cup exchange: Barbara Troy, Donna Parent, Gerry McAfee and Denise. Charlotte also distributed facts if we lose a pound a week. Donna Parent was given the skinny dish.
Denise read some facts regarding SRD and Inspiration Workshop. The workshop in Houlton will be in September. SRD will be in Augusta in May. Barbara Troy spoke on the Snowball contest and a new contest named Shamrock, to begin next week. Some of the requirements are to drink four glasses of water daily; exercise, take off weight, contact another TOPS or KOPS member, and wear a charm when attending a meeting; stay for the meeting.
For information about the chapter, you may contact Charlotte Marley at 757-8483 or Betty Ivey at 532-9653. Every week we meet at nine o’clock and end the meeting an hour later. Weigh-in time is at 8-8:45 a.m. and no member is weighed after 8:45 to allow officers to add their weight charts. Come, take off weight and enjoy. You’ll be glad you did.

Island Falls News
The Island Falls Historical Society held a very successful food sale on Feb. 24 at Jerry’s Thriftway. Many people took advantage of the good weather and in a couple of hours the homemade bread, pies, cakes and many sweets were fast disappearing.
I have heard the good news that Jerolyn Ireland is doing very well in rehab in Bangor and that there is the possibility of her returning to Houlton and continuing her rehab there. She is recovering from severe injuries to both shoulders. Beth Savage Brewer has been a recent guest of her mother, Elinor Savage, for a few days. While here she made a trip to the Patten area to get snapshots of beautiful Mt. Katahdin in the winter.
Following the 10 inches of snow that fell on Feb. 24, I was hard at it the next day to get food out for all my bird friends. My faithful snow plower, Owen Botting, did a good job clearing some of the snow away but I did have a bit of shoveling to do where the plow couldn’t go. The gold finch, nut hatches, woodpeckers and chickadees were right there watching as I filled up the feeders and when I put out the peanut butter and lard mixture the woodpeckers and blue jays were the first to get to it. Hope they leave some of it for the two red squirrels.
Also, today, had a grosbeak in one feeder. First one I’ve seen. Haven’t seen the deer in a couple of days, but am still throwing out their goodies just in case they arrive. There are four who arrive, usually about dusk, and if I am lucky, can watch them follow the trail they have made from the woods, across my back yard and up to the house, then, after they finish, they go back to the woods by another trail they have made which is close to the woods near my neighbors home.

Molunkus Valley Sno-Drifters
By Deb Long
The Sno-Drifters held their annual Poker Run on Feb. 18. It was a great day for it, as the trails and food were awesome, as usual. We have some great cooks and are proud to say so.
The ride was a 42-mile run, using some of our club trails that we hadn’t used in the past, was great. Sledders returned back to clubhouse for prizes.
First place was Andrew Garan; second, Brenden Lane and third, Jim Parameter. The prizes were handed out until they were all gone.
After figuring the poker hands, everyone got to enjoy the meal of chicken soup, chili, roll, drink and dessert.
Thank you to all the area businesses who donated to help us make this possible. Without your generosity the events would not be possible. So again, we thank all our area businesses, in a tough economy you still support us and it is greatly appreciated.
Also to the members and non-members who help us, believe you me, your generosity never goes unnoticed. Thank you to all who held and helped out at the stops. Again what a way to support your local club.
Thanks also to the groomer guys for all their hard work on trails, as it never ends. They put long hours into making sure the trails are up to par. We are looking forward to next year’s run!
