TAMC offers epidurals
PRESQUE ISLE — In response to patient requests, The Aroostook Medical Center is now offering epidurals to all moms-to-be.
“Epidurals are another good option for pain management during labor,” said Joyce Hebert, MD, a TAMC OB/GYN physician. “They are very popular, and the response from our patients has been great.”
An epidural is given by inserting medication through a small catheter directly into a special location in the back. The medication helps with pain during childbirth by decreasing the sensation in the lower part of the body. A very safe procedure, epidurals are given by an anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist. The anesthesia provider and OB/GYN provider work together to make sure that the epidural is delivered at the right time.
Hebert estimates that 70 to 80 percent of her patients opt for an epidural. It’s the most popular pain relief option, but it is only one of many tools available to help reduce discomfort.
“I encourage my patients early on in the labor process to try things that don’t involve medication, like getting in the tub, walking, using birthing balls and trying some different positioning and massage techniques,” added Hebert. “As these techniques become a little less effective, we look at other options, which include epidurals and other medications.”
According to Hebert, epidurals are appropriate for most patients. Epidurals allow moms-to-be to rest during prolonged labor, and they are especially beneficial when other techniques are no longer keeping the patient comfortable. Childbirth may invoke feelings of joy, but it can also be uncomfortable, and epidurals allow moms to have a more positive birth experience.
“I think that with the addition of epidurals, we’re able to provide everything women need to get through what can be one of the biggest days of their lives,” said Hebert. “It’s about the complete experience, starting when they walk in the door. I think that we’re very good at providing those services.”
TAMC also offers epidurals to their surgical patients for pain management following other procedures such as major abdominal surgery.
