Assembly to focus on bullying

WASHBURN NEWS

International STAND UP to Bullying Day is a biannual event commemorating two Canadian teens who took a very public stance in support of a targeted student. Brandon Baldwin, Office of the Attorney General, Civil Rights Team Project, will be presenting an assembly at Washburn District High School on Wed., Feb. 8, at 9 a.m. This presentation, sponsored by the WDHS team, focuses on how hard it can be to stand up for others.

Home for the holidays

Specialist Matthew J. Howe, stationed at Wheeler Army Airfield Base, Hawaii, with Delta Troop 2-6 CAV 25th Infantry Division, spent the holidays with his family in Washburn.

Howe is the son of Mike and Angel Farley of Washburn and Jay Howe of Easton. He is a specialist in the U.S. Army. He spent his time in Washburn with his brothers Christopher and Noah Farley and sisters Kari Howe, Kassie and Kyli Farley. They really enjoyed having their big brother around to tease. Matthew also spent time with nieces Alexy Lynch and Alayna Labreck of Washburn.

While home, Howe attended the Howe family reunion where he was able to spend time with lots of extended family. A Farley yearly Christmas Party was held on Dec. 17 to celebrate Howe’s visit, along with his brother Christopher’s return from his completion of his first semester at UMO in the mechanical engineering program. It was a great time for all who attended and wonderful for the two young men to get together with family.

There was a “Good-Bye, Good-Luck” send-off for Howe on Dec. 30. Howe left for Hawaii on Dec. 31. Howe is now in Kandahar, Afghanistan, for a one-year deployment.

There was also a “Good-Bye, Good-Luck” send-off for Christopher, to celebrate his 19th birthday and the start of his second semester at UMO. It was an absolutely wonderful time for the entire family.

Winter playground

Students in Laura Gardiner’s Pre-K through grade 7 physical education classes and those who participate in the after-school program have been able to enjoy a special treat thanks to Wendy Ross and the 21st Century Grant program. Cross-country skis and snowshoes have been purchased through the grant and now students are out on the “slopes” behind the school learning new skills. Special thanks goes to Matt Cole for grooming the hill for the program.

Proud of squad

For the first time in many years, the Washburn Cheerleader Squad competed in Caribou and then in Bangor for the Cheerleading Competition. They put in many hours of hard work and proudly represented their school with a fantastic performance!
