Lady Tigers squeak out big win over CAHS
Washburn and Fort Fairfield lead the way in Eastern Maine Class D schoolgirl basketball. In the Heal Point standings as of Tuesday the Beavers are ranked No. 1 and the Tigers are a close second, only two and a half points behind.
In Class B, the Presque Isle Wildcats are at the top of the standings, more than 10 points ahead of Nokomis. The regular season ends on Feb. 10.
Here’s recap of games played through Monday, Jan. 30:
Presque Isle 68, Fort Kent 14 — The Presque Isle Lady Wildcats’ march through the regular season continued on Monday at home against Fort Kent and as with their 14 previous games this one ended with a lopsided victory.
Megan Ireland tossed in 20 points, Chandler Guerrette scored 13 and Hannah Graham added nine for 15-0 Presque Isle.
Michaela Desjardins paced 8-7 Fort Kent with eight points.
Fort Fairfield 54, Madawaska 23 — At Madawaska, Monday Amanda Hotham’s 13-point effort sparked the Tigers to victory over the Owls.
Kacie York, Rebekah Bouchard and Danielle Tracy scored seven points apiece for 12-2 Fort Fairfield.
Madawaska (4-11) was led by Hannah Cote, who posted 10 points and eight rebounds.
Ashland 41, Katahdin 29 — The Ashland Lady Hornets got 15 points from Kayla Cote to get by the Katahdin Lady Cougars in Stacyville on Monday.
Sophie Theriault added 10 points for the 5-10 winners.
Megan Merry paced 3-13 Katahdin with 15 points.
Washburn 75, Southern Aroostook 37 — At Washburn Monday, Mackenzie Worcester notched a double-double with 18 points and 11 assists to help top-ranked Washburn improve to 14-1.
Joan Overman chipped in with 18 points for the winners while Carsyn Koch added 13 and Rayah Saucier netted 11.
Sable Altvater paced the 6-9 Warriors of Dyer Brook with 12 points.
Presque Isle 68, Washington Academy 26 — The Presque Isle Lady Wildcats continue to find little resistance on their schedule. Saturday at home Presque Isle beat Washington Academy, 68-26.
Ireland scored a game-high 14 points for the 14-0 Wildcats. Freshman Krystal Kingsbury tossed in 13 points and Guerrette had 12.
Washington Academy drops to 3-11.
Central Aroostook 54, Madawaska 34 — At Madawaska Saturday, Central Aroostook pushed their record to 11-3 with a win over the Owls.
Rachel Grew paced the Lady Panthers with 18 points. Vicki McIntyre added 14.
Central Aroostook came out in the second half and outscored Madawaska 29-12 to ice the game after a close first half.
Nicole Cyr scored 16 points for 4-10 Madawaska.
Washburn 62, Easton 37 — The Washburn Lady Beavers improved their record to 13-1 on Thursday with a home win over Easton.
Olivia Doody had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to power Washburn to the win. Carmen Bragg filled up the box score with nine points, 10 rebounds and six assists.
Hannah Ferris led Easton (7-7) with 10 points.

TO THE HOOP — Central Aroostook’s 
Vicki McIntyre makes a strong move to the hoop against Fort Fairfield. McIntyre scored 29 points, but is wasn’t quite enough as the Tigers beat the Panthers, 48-46.
Fort Fairfield 48, Central Aroostook 46 — At Mars Hill Wednesday, Fort Fairfield and Central Aroostook hooked up in a great game, which featured big momentum swings.
The Lady Tigers came out strong in the first quarter and took a six-point lead. The second quarter was all Central Aroostook as the Lady Panthers grabbed a slim three-point halftime lead.
“CAHS had a great second quarter outscoring us 17-5,” said Fort Fairfield coach Larry Gardner. “We had a good start to the third quarter coming back to tie the game quickly then after that it was just back and forth with little runs here and there by both teams. Our composure down the stretch was important and having our veterans on the floor then was key.”
Hotham paced Fort Fairfield with 24 points. Tracy chipped in with 19 as the Lady Tigers improved their record to 11-2. Logan Bubar had 11 assists.
McIntyre had a huge game for the Lady Panthers (10-3) with 25 points and 19 rebounds.
