    PRESQUE ISLE — Appointments to boards and committees and other issues were discussed and voted on during City Council’s Jan. 23 meeting at City Hall.

    Councilors addressed the following matters:

• Set public hearing dates for Chapter 49 — Administration of Government, Presque Isle Development Fund bylaws, Downtown Revitalization Committee bylaws and Administration of Government Policy for Feb. 6 and March 5;

• Authorized a $3,000 carry forward for the Presque Isle Downtown Revitalization Committee;

• Authorized year-end budget overdrafts, with Bennett noting this was “strictly related to increased cost in heating fuels,” and that the city “completely blew last year’s budget for heat and fuel” as a result;

• Tabled discussion of changing the yield sign to a stop sign at the intersection of Hillside and Blake streets and changing parking restrictions near the Presque Isle High School to a later date;

• Under appointments for boards and committees, Bennett recommended and councilors passed changes to the Recreation & Parks Advisory Board, setting Judy Perkins’ term to expire in 2015 and AJ Clukey’s to expire in 2014, thus creating a staggered term system;

• Appointed: Michael Williams to a one-year term on the Audit Committee; Cathy Beaulieu, Patricia Rathbun and Luke Rossignol to four-year terms on the Downtown Revitalization Committee; and Allison Ladner and Jacqueline Goodine to three-year terms on the Library Committee; Bennett also noted that the Board of Appeals has a vacancy and those interested should contact the city clerk;

• Approved a five-year contract with the County of Aroostook for the disposal of municipal solid waste generated by unorganized township of T11 R4 (Scopan) for the period of Jan. 1, 2012 through Dec. 31, 2016;

• Approved a contract with Gil’s Sanitation, Inc. and Star City Sanitation, Inc. for the collection of solid waste and recyclables for the Pay As You Throw program, with a termination date of Dec. 31, 2013; and

• Approved a waiver of interest on a personal property account for 2005-06 on property located at 63 State Street for Vickie Brown, whose business closed in 2004.

    Council’s next meeting will be Monday, Feb. 6, at 6 p.m. at City Hall. Meetings are open to all, with the public encouraged to participate. For more information, call 760-2785 or visit www.presqueisle.govoffice2.com
