Regular hoop season nears end

Local high school basketball teams are entering the last week of their regular schedule, with the final countable game on Friday, Feb. 10.
The girls’ preliminary games will be scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 14, while the boys’ playoffs will be Wednesday, Feb. 15. The Eastern Maine High School Basketball Tournament at the Bangor Auditorium is Feb. 17-25.
On Monday, the East Grand Lady Vikings topped visiting Calvary Chapel, 51-30.
    Elisha Farley led East Grand with 16 points, while Shaunna Beaudoin tossed in 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
At Stacyville, the Lady Cougars were overpowered, 41-29, by Ashland.
Megan Merry hit for 15 points, while Delaney Fitzpatrick and Lizzie Knowles each chipped in with four points apiece.
In Washburn, the Lady Beavers took control en route to a 75-37 win over Southern Aroostook.
MacKenzie Worcester recorded a double-double,18 points and 11 rebounds for Washburn.
For Southern Aroostook, Sable Altvater tossed in 12 points.
In last week’s action, the Greater Houlton Christian Academy teams hosted East Grand at Hodgdon High School on Wednesday.
In the boys’ game, the Eagles built a 16-point opening lead and soared to a 71-25 win.
For GHCA, 5-6, Ethan Holmes racked up a game-high 16 points and Adam Little added 12.
For the 0-13 Vikings of Danforth, Kenneth Winiarski netted 10 points.
In the girls’ game, GHCA stayed close to visiting East Grand until the Lady Vikings’ 11-4 fourth-quarter run put enough distance between the two clubs.
The Lady Vikings defeated GHCA, 44-38.
GHCA cut into East Grand’s first-quarter 10-5 lead with 2:03 left and then made another attempt before halftime to draw to within a basket, 16-14, at the 1:25 mark. The teams were close to start the third, with East Grand leading 18-14, setting up an exciting finish.
Beaudoin led East Grand with 15 points, while her sister Kaitlyn chipped in with eight.
For GHCA, Destinee Neureuther scored a game-high 17 points, while Olivia Lord netted 12.
In other action, the East Grand girls met Shead last Saturday in Danforth, with Shead holding off a late charge by the Lady Vikes to take a 60-52 victory.
Elisha Farley tossed in a game-high 17 points, while Jenny Armstrong posted 11.
The GHCA teams were both back in action last Friday when they traveled to Madawaska.
The Eagles overtook Madawaska, 75-64 behind Micah Wiley’s sharp-shooting 34 points, with Holmes pumping in 26 points and Deyrell Vargas netting 11 more.
On Saturday, the Eagles were downed by the Van Buren Crusaders, 69-46.
The Crusaders outscored GHCA, 17-2 in the second quarter, 30-12, to make the difference in the game.
For the Eagles, Holmes paced the offense with 14 points, while Vargas chipped in with 13 and Wiley added 10.
In the girls’ game, the GHCA Lady Eagles watched Van Buren sophomore Parise Rossignol score her 1,000th high school point in the opening quarter.
Van Buren overpowered GHCA, 78-22, as Rossignol finished with 29 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds.
The Lady Eagles fell behind 26-4 to start the game and trailed 42-13 at halftime. The Crusaders continued to race away in the third, 65-17, en route to the win.
For GHCA, Lord scored seven points to lead the Lady Eagles, while Neureuther netted five points; Halle Duff and Colby Walker, four points apiece.
The Hodgdon Hawks met the Limestone/MSSM Eagles twice last week, taking both victories. In their first matchup on Jan. 24, the Hawks won 76-47 behind Josh Hudson’s 29 points. Nick Lunn hit for 16 points and Chris Hudson posted 14 more for the winners.
The Hawks jumped to a 20-9 opening lead and cruised to the lopsided win.
In Mars Hill last Thursday, the Hawks pushed Central Aroostook into overtime (60-all) after making up an 18-point deficit, as the Panthers declared an 83-77 victory.
The Panthers led 27-17 to start the game and held a comfortable 50-32 halftime cushion. In the second half, the teams played evenly after Hodgdon made up ground, with a 60-all score to end the third and a 74-all game finish to force overtime.
Steven Decker keyed CAHS’ offense with 23 points while Dan Brewer and Brendan York each tossed in 21 points and Mike McClung added 15.
For Hodgdon, J. Hudson had a team-high 22 points, while brother Chris connected for 21 points. Devon Logie finished with 12 points and Tyler Sherman had 11.
On Saturday, Hodgdon completed the two-game series with Limestone/MSSM with a 67-35 win in Hodgdon.
C. Hudson and Lunn each scored 19 points to help Hodgdon to the victory and a 10-4 record.
In girls’ action, the Lady Hawks got by Limestone/MSSM, 52-48, in overtime last Tuesday in Limestone.
Mariah Wiley made one of her four 3-pointers with 30 seconds left to tie the game, then sank the clinching free throw in overtime to lift Hodgdon to victory.
The Lady Hawks led 12-11 to start the game and saw Limestone/MSSM take a 27-25 halftime advantage. In the third, the teams played evenly to a 37-all score. After the final eight minutes, a winner was yet to be decided as the teams were tied 48-all.
Wiley scored 17 points, while Jennah Steamer netted 12 and Lacey McQuarrie 11 more for the winners.
Last Thursday, the Lady Hawks overpowered visiting Van Buren, 79-26.
Haley Gardiner pumped in a game-high 19 points, while Maya Gardiner connected for 14 and McQuarrie added another 11.
In the team’s first meeting, Hodgdon narrowly defeated Van Buren, 48-46 on Jan. 7. In Hodgdon, three Van Buren players did not make the trip due to illness.
In Stacyville last Tuesday, the Katahdin Cougars defeated Ashland, 62-43, behind Billy Livezey’s 18 points and Braden Cunningham’s 14. Colton Bivighouse and Wyatt Morse each added nine points in the win.
Last Tuesday in Mars Hill, the Central Aroostook Panthers picked up a, 69-28, lopsided win over the Katahdin girls.
The Lady Panthers grabbed a 23-4 lead after one en route to the win.
Rachael Grew scored four 3-pointers on her way to 17 points, while Vicki McIntyre (11 rebounds) and Sarah Grass each tossed in 13 points and Kayla Cushman (7 rebounds) netted 12 more.
For Katahdin, Megan Merry led her team with 10 points, while Morgan Livezey and Ashley Randall each chipped in with seven.
Last Thursday, the Penobscot Valley Howlers toppled Katahdin, 56-26.
Megan Merry posted 12 points for the Lady Cougars, who fell behind at halftime, 27-9.
The Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors were halted last Wednesday by host Limestone/MSSM, 42-27.
The Lady Warriors trailed 17-14 at halftime and were outscored in the third, 14-2, as the Eagles rolled.
Mataya Hartin and Sable Altvater each scored eight points each for Southern Aroostook.
