Pregnancy Care Center to host Sunday event

The Pregnancy Care Centers of Aroostook in Presque Isle, Houlton and Fort Kent, will commemorate national Sanctity of Human Life Sunday (SOHLS) to raise awareness about the sanctity of human life, and highlight what the organization is doing to support women facing unplanned pregnancies. PCC will mark the nationwide Jan. 22 event by educating the public of their work, dispersing SOHLS brochures, and recruiting volunteers.

The Pregnancy Care Centers will use the special day to launch their largest fundraiser for the year, the Baby Bottle Drive. This is a simple and easy way for churches, elderly groups, and people of all ages to help. The centers provide empty baby bottles to be taken and filled with change or dollar bills.

Pregnancy Care Center’s Executive Director, Christie Corey said, “Sanctity of Human Life Sunday is an opportunity for Americans to reflect on the intrinsic value of human life and the fundamental right to life.”

In 1983, President Reagan issued a proclamation creating a special day to focus on the sanctity of human life and fundamental right to life. National Sanctity of Human Life Sunday is held on the Sunday in January that falls closest to the day on which the Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions were handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court on Jan. 22, 1973.

“SOHLS comes and goes with little to no recognition. Seven years ago, we decided to take it out of the churches and onto the streets. We added an event to emphasize the high value God places on life from the womb to the grave. In Presque Isle, we have an annual, ‘Line Up for Life’ at 2 p.m. on Main Street in front of the Northeastland Hotel. The Line Up for Life is a way of bringing awareness of this special day to our community. We hold signs with positive, life-affirming messages, while lining Main Street for one hour praying silently for our nation, community, pastors, teachers, loved ones, and neighbors who have been touched by abortion. At 3 p.m. we return to the Northeastland Hotel for refreshments and prayer. We invite the community to come out and be a part of this special day,” Corey said.
