CARIBOU, Maine — While massages undoubtedly feel great, Licensed Massage Therapist Meghnn Scott points out that the benefits of massage extend well beyond relaxation.
Whether the ailment is everyday aches and pains or full blown depression, a half-hour massage may go a long way in improving personal wellness.
“A lot of people aren’t familiar with the benefits of massage,” Scott explained. “Not only does it increase blood flow to the lymphatic system, it calms the nervous system and can help reduce blood pressure.”
Other benefits of massage can include an increase in metabolism, pain relief from muscle soreness and tension, the relief of emotional and mental fatigue, and a reduction in anxiety. Massage is also believed to improve immune system function. Scott even said that one hour of massage can be equal to a couple hours of sleep — a number that other sources place as high as seven or eight hours.
With multiple massage options available — Swedish, deep tissue, hot stone and Reiki sessions, to name a few — each massage is uniquely tailored to address a client’s specific needs; Scott even offers pre- and post-natal massages for expecting and new mothers.
Sessions range from a half-hour to an hour-and-a-half and the benefits from the hands-on approach to healing are immediate, as massage is beneficial to the body and the mind as each session is an opportunity for clients to become relaxed, restored and rejuvenated.
Of course, not all of Scott’s clients are actively seeking to cure their ailments through massage or bolster their health.
“Some people do it for themselves because they enjoy the relaxation,” she said.
In addition to being a licensed massage therapist, Scott has a degree in athletic training and is employed by County Physical Therapy. Looking to broaden her educational background, Scott chose to study massage as its holistic facet of medicine intrigued her.
While she has lots of experience working with the human body, it’s her first foray into being an entrepreneur. Minor apprehensions aside, Scott is clearly excited about her new business and the relaxing atmosphere her practice exudes. The new business has been open for about two weeks and is off to a good start with many happy clients.
With Valentines Day right around the corner (just like birthdays and anniversaries always seem to be), gift certificates for massage therapy are available.
