100 Years Ago-Jan. 10, 1912
Aroostook Times

    Houlton — An option on land has been secured for the purpose of developing a park. The Burleigh land in rear of the homestead and lying between the land owned by the Tenney heirs and the farm of John Bird containing about 24 acres and a right of way from Pleasant Street was available for the sum of $10,000.
    School — The school committee members have decided to call the new school on Green Street, the Longfellow School.
    Local — Mr. and Mrs. George S. Gentle are planning to leave here in a short time for California, where they will spend the winter.

    Augusta — Forty-eight Maine towns are unable to pay their teachers, the indebtedness at the end of the fall term ranging from three week’ wages to pay for periods extending into three school years.
    Army life — While the rest of us are shivering and nursing frost-bitten ears and toes, David D. Stevens, son of Mr. and Mrs. I.C. Stevens and George Nadeau, nephew of H.A. Manuel bask in the tropical sunshine on the glistening sands of Waikiki Beach. They are soldiers in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Armstrong in Honolulu.
    Linneus — Bernard and James Hannigan entertained at a little party at their home New Year’s evening with the following, Ruth Hogan, Dorothy Robinson, Phyllis Cunliffe and Ruth Peabody of Houlton and Robert Stewart. Refreshments of ice cream and cake were served.
50 Years Ago- Jan. 11, 1962

    Nominee — Harold H. Inman, member of the Houlton Rotary Club is the official and only nominee for the post of District Governor of District 781 which includes 30 clubs in Maine and New Brunswick. Previous Houlton Rotarians holding this post were the late Bernard Archibald and Fred Shean.
    Expanding — Day’s Jewelry of Houlton announced their proposed expansion into the major appliance field by the acquisition of 1500 square feet of floor space now occupied by the Bell Shops, next door to Day’s on Main Street. Kendall Carson is the manager.
    Local — Ruby Ingraham of Orono, formerly of Littleton, returned to Orono where she is a college dorm housemother, after visiting for a few days with her sister, Mrs. Norris Nason and Mr. Nason.

    Snow —A couple of weekend storms blanketed the area with 19 inches of snow.
    Assistant principal — A special SAD 29 board meeting would decide whether Joe Feeney or Allison Wiggin would become the new assistant principal under Andrew Buswell, due to the resignation of Arthur Greaney. Both applicants are employed by the district.
    Promotions — Sandra McGary and Claude Kenny employees of Casco Northern Bank have received promotions.
    New director — Rachel Good of Monticello has accepted the position of director of the Community Youth Center located on Randall Avenue.
    Cary Library — Due to budget cuts the library will be open only two evenings per week rather than four.
