HOWLAND — The Caribou Vikings wrestling team managed a top-eight finish in the 25-team Penobscot Valley High School Holiday Tournament on Thursday.

The team results were: Ellsworth 155, Bucksport 124, Erskine Academy 108, Brewer 103, Mt.View 85, Morse 80.5, Madison 79, Caribou 78, Fort Kent 69, Nokomis 61, Hermon 48, Mattanwcook Academy 45.5, MDI 42, Winslow 38, Medomak Valley 36, MCI 33, George Stevens Academy 32, Penobscot Valley 27, Calais 24, Old Town 19, Woodland 15, Central 15, Calvary Chapel 14, Sumner 4 and Oceanside 0.

Caribou coach James “Chico” Hernandez said the Vikings competed in only nine of the 14 weight classes and had two wrestlers not make weight, so all in all he was pleased with the eighth-place finish.

“I am very proud of the wrestlers who competed and gave it their best,” he said. “There were many lessons learned by everybody and we are just going to get better.”

Some of the Caribou wrestlers who had an outstanding meet were Robert Caudill, Brendan Wood, Colby Conroy and Rebecca King.

The freshman Caudill won three straight matches to win the 120-pound weight class.

“He did a super job and is rapidly becoming noticed by wrestlers in the state,” said Hernandez.

Wood won bronze in the 132-pound weight class and Conroy captured a bronze at 160.

King placed fourth at 113 pounds, losing the bronze medal match 9-8 in triple overtime.

Caribou wrestlers are back in action tonight at 7 p.m. for a home meet with Fort Kent.
