Go west, young students

To the editor:

It is Christmas Day as I write this. The day started sunny and shiny. Watching the sun rise over the campus, I thought of all the different sunrises I have seen. Somehow even in the midst of all the chaos it rises each day with a completely new face. A hard job to do.

Students are getting ready for their final exams and then they get six weeks of time off before the spring semester begins in March.

Already plans are being made for students to take trips into the hinterland and abroad. Excitement is building as brochures are consulted and plans are made. For many of these students this marks a milestone — their first trip on their own. Chinese students do take trips while in high school, if they are in the top tier of students, And many families are now traveling on holidays. But it is in college that independence strikes.

I had assigned a final chapter in the text book to students to make a presentation from. It was on travel. I tend to be in the camp that encourages people to travel.

My students did not let me down in the presentation area. I was treated to a wide range of venues and cultures. It was through these presentations that I learned how excited these students are to see the world. I hope they get to see some of this wonderful world. It is good to see the sunrise on a new day. Enjoy it.
