Madore (GAHAGAN), Anita, 92, of Sudbury, MA and Niantic, CT, in Hyannis, MA, on September 20, 2011.

Anita (Gahagan) Madore, 92, formerly of Sudbury, MA and Niantic, CT, died on September 20, 2011 at Mayflower Place in Hyannis, Massachusetts.

Anita was born in Caribou and graduated from Caribou High School in 1937. She studied nursing with the Sisters of Mercy in Caribou before transferring to Queens Hospital in Portland, where she obtained her RN degree in 1940. Anita practiced nursing at the Providence Lying-In Hospital in Providence, RI and at New Rochelle General Hospital in New Rochelle, NY before marrying Roger Madore of Van Buren in 1943. Roger was a Captain in the U.S. Army, and Anita lived with him on military bases in Oklahoma and Texas before he was sent overseas, during which time she stayed with Roger’s mother, Lydia Madore, in Van Buren, caring for the first of their four children. When Roger returned from WWII, he was offered a position with the pharmaceutical supply company, Cutter Laboratories. Over the years, Anita and her family moved several times, eventually settling in New Jersey, and then in Massachusetts. As her family grew, Anita took time out from her career, returning to nursing in 1968, at which time she dedicated her life to caring for the elderly. She retired from nursing in 1985, moving to the coast of Connecticut to be close to her sister, Evelyn (Gahagan) Wilkos, and later to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, to be close to her eldest daughter, Veronica O’Connor.

Anita was predeceased by her husband, Roger Madore, who died in 1978, and by her eldest son, William Madore, who died in 1991. She is survived by her children, Veronica O’Connor of Dennis, MA; Catherine Madore of Denver, CO; and Michael Madore and his wife, Barbara Madore, of Auburn, MA, as well as five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
