UMPI women win home opener
PRESQUE ISLE — University of Maine-Presque Isle sisters Emily and Renee Moore of Lisbon proved that, at least this past Saturday, “clutch” runs in the family.
After University of Maine-Fort Kent guard Megan Land hit a 3-point shot with 2:47 remaining to give the Bengals a 57-54 advantage, the sisters Moore took over. In the next 2:30 Emily and Renee accounted for all of their team’s points during a decisive 9-4 run.
Teammate Emily Pelletier of Fort Kent then put the game out of reach by hitting two free throws with less than 10 seconds on the clock to give the Owls a 65-61 win over their rivals to the north.
A close game throughout, the Owls took a 33-26 advantage into the halftime locker room. Nearly midway through the second half, that lead had expanded to 10. But Fort Kent battled back, outscoring UMPI over the next eight minutes 23-10. The comeback included three three-pointers, two from Land and one from sophomore Taylor Boucher.
Down by three late, UMPI ratcheted up the defense the rest of the way, only allowing the Bengals one basket after Land’s three put them behind.
Emily Moore led all scorers in the contest with 17 points.
With the win, UMPI is 2-0 at home this season and have won three of their last four games.
UMPI takes a break from action for finals and the holidays. They will return to the court on Thursday Jan. 5 when they host Houghton (NY) College at 4 p.m.
