We love our dogs!

IN THE CITY

by Pat Webb

Did you know that there are over 1,300 licensed dogs living in the city of Presque Isle?

The most popular is the good old all American mixed breed (308), followed by Labs (121) and Golden Retrievers (86). The most popular name is Buddy; there are quite a few Misty’s, Molly’s and Max’s, too. But there’s not a single Fido registered in the entire city.

Well it’s that time again. The 2012 dog licenses are now available at City Hall. The current registration expires on Dec, 31, 2011. A late fee of $25 will be charged after Jan. 31, 2012.

The registration fee for an unaltered dog is $11, for neutered or spayed dogs the fee is $6. If your pet is newly spayed or neutered, please bring the paperwork with you. Dogs cannot be registered unless they have a rabies vaccination, so if your dog was vaccinated during the current year, be sure to bring in the certificate from the veterinarian.

Why, you ask, do we need to license our dogs anyway? The quick answer is because it’s a State law; the city simply collects the fee and issues the license on behalf of the State of Maine. Did you know that 90 percent of this fee is used to fight animal abuse in Maine? To report cruelty to animals or abuse call (207) 287-3846 or 1 (877) 269-9200 or e-mail animal.welfare@maine.gov.

If you no longer own an animal that you had registered last year, or if you have any questions, please be sure to contact the clerks in City Hall at 760-2700.
