Island Falls News
The Island Falls Historical Society had a very successful cookie sale on Dec. 3, with many people coming in to browse through Emerson’s store, buy cookies and enjoy the refreshments that were available.
Also, the Historical Society has had a Traveling Food Basket as a fundraiser and at this time the location of the food basket is unknown. If anyone has any information as to its whereabouts please, contact Reneva Smith or give her a call at 463-2504.
Mrs. Mildred Kennard is now a patient at Madigan Estates for rehab following a hip injury in November. I’m sure she would appreciate receiving notes and cards to make her days brighter. Had another note from the Varneys, former residents of Island Falls, and they are both doing well and are getting used to seeing no snow in December.
I have been seeing many crows again in my back lawn. Guess they are looking for the breadcrumbs I had been throwing out earlier. Have seen lots of tracks of squirrels in the smattering of snow we had last week, but have yet to see them in my feeders, as two of my feeders are what you call squirrel resistant. I haven’t put any birdseed in my open feeders yet. Maybe when it gets colder. That’s when the red squirrels and gray squirrels have a heyday trying to be the first into the open feeders.
I have blue jays and woodpeckers around and they enjoy the peanut butter and lard mixture I hand out. Still no deer as in years before. Look for their hoof prints in the new snow (when we get snow, that is) and no luck yet.
TOPS ME 0233, HOULTON
by Lois Downing
Take Off Pounds Sensibly Chapter 0233 of Houlton met at the Aldergate building Friday, Dec. 2, for its weekly meeting. Barbara Troy returned after a summer’s vacation and she was the official greeter.
We had roll call, pledges and Denise Clark led the meeting. About 17 of our ladies were weighed. They all stayed for the meeting plus Melva Folsom attended the Christmas party.
The party was held in Oakfield at the Smoki Haulers Snowmobile clubhouse. The gathering place was all decorated in the holiday motif with Christmas wreaths in each window, a huge decorated Christmas tree adorned the center of the floor. In the corner was an inflated snowman dressed in green and white! Bob Locke, one of the waiters, sang a few Christmas carols at the end of the program. We all agreed that it was a fun time with lots of good food and atmosphere. Pictures were taken at the end of the program and before our Yankee swap.
Loser of the week was Barbara Troy with runners-up Barbara Grant, Charlotte Marley and Allie Smith. Denise spoke about the next workshop in Van Buren in March. Barbara Troy took charge of the next contest, ‘’Snowballing Pounds Away.’’ We will also have a month’s contest ending January 6. More information on this at a later date.
At the Christmas party, a Yankee swap was conducted, assisted by Denise Clark and Don Marley. The menu was fruit cocktail, baked potato, peas/carrots, ham, rolls, pickles with a variety of desserts incuding pie and cream puffs, very tasty.
We were saddened by the absence of Joyce Estey, a patient at a Bangor hospital resulting from a fall. Denise had distributed greeting cards from the usual container.
We will meet again at the same location December 9. If you need more information on the chapter, you may call Charlotte Marley at 757-8483 or Betty Ivey at 532-9653.
Weigh-in is 8-8:45 a.m. with the meeting starting at 9 o’clock and usually ending an hour later. Come, enjoy, get weighed, lose weight, and meet new people.
