I have to honestly tell you that the “winter wonderland” at the Central Aroostook Humane Society is beyond amazing for Pictures with Santa Paws. The decorations were perfect, and Santa and Mrs. Claus were both there to greet pets and children alike. There were wonderful refreshments and staff and board members were there to help those looking to add a new addition to their family. It was breathtaking.
I took six dogs and three children for pictures. As usual, I am very proud of both the children and the dogs! I went back through old pictures of mine with pictures with Santa Paws; we started going when my oldest was just an infant and she is now 11 years old. These pictures make great Christmas cards and keepsakes. Pictures with Santa Paws is happening again next weekend, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hope to see you there!
While at the shelter, one supporter came through the door and left us a wonderfully large donation! It blew my mind. It makes me feel so grateful to be a part of this wonderful organization, helping the homeless animals. It is also wonderful to receive an unsolicited donation such as this; it reminds me that the public is grateful for the work we do as well.
On another happy note, we had a collie owner-surrendered to the shelter. Her name was Lassie and she was 10 years old and super sweet! I was so worried that nobody would want her; she was old, but boy was I wrong. I was informed on Saturday that a lovely couple that the shelter is very familiar with came to the shelter and took Lassie home. Everyone at CAHS was beyond happy for Lassie and for her new owners. Holiday miracles do happen.
Our shelter is very full right now with many wonderful dogs and cats, just waiting for loving homes. Many of these animals are already altered; they have all been vaccinated. What would stop you from adopting? Our mother’s room is full of mama kitties waiting to have their babies, so there will be even more cats, and yet more coming through as strays every day.
If you suspect an animal is being left out in the cold with inadequate shelter, no food or water, please contact your animal control officer or police department. Let them investigate the situation; make them aware of your concerns. It is up to us to be the voice of the voiceless and make that call before that animal freezes to death on the end of a chain. I know it may seem like hard call to make, but it is necessary. Maybe they will find the animal is fine and properly cared for, but what if they don’t? You may just help save a life.
