ASHLAND — Just in time for the start of tryouts two new varsity basketball coaches have been hired at Ashland High School.

Trevor Hews and Ashlee Peters were appointed as the boys and girls coaches for the 2011-12 season by the school board last week.

Peters takes over the varsity girls job stepping up from the JV position last year. She replaces Bill Nemer.

“I played varsity basketball for Ashland for four years and I hope to give back to the town I once played for,” she said.

Peters say from Day One she will be preaching defense.

“Good defense is going to create our offensive opportunities,” the coach said. “I want to press which should result in steals and easy layups.”

As a high school senior Peters played in the EM Class D final at the Bangor Auditorium. She said it’s her hope to get the girls’ program back to Bangor and bring some hardware home in the coming years.

The Ashland girls open up their regular season on the road Monday, Dec. 12 at East Grand High School at 5 p.m.

For Hews this is his first varsity basketball coaching job as well. He did coach middle school soccer this past fall.

Even though he is a young coach, he said that can be an advantage.

“I feel this will be a great year for the players to develop and improve as basketball players as I learn and improve to become a better coach,” he said.

Hews says this year’s Hornets team will be young, but most of last year’s starters are back and he is excited for the start of the season.

The boys/ first game of the season will be at home against Washburn on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m.
