Patten Library improvements
The Veteran’s Memorial Library in Patten is happy to announce the carpeting installation is done. We received a grant from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation to install carpeting and linoleum in the library.
We’ve also received three new high-speed computers for public use, including access to Ancestry.com free to our patrons. We have added to our Young Adult collection thanks to the Libri Foundation and funds donated by friends of the late Honey Lyons. All are welcome to visit and see the improvements.

Purple Hat Society
by Lois Downing
The Purple Hat ladies met at the SAVE building on Bird Street for its November meeting Tuesday, November 8. One guest from Oakfield attended, Thelma Flowers. We were given the menu ahead of time so mostly we decided what we wanted early. The service and meal was very good. I gave the blessing before the meal.
Each lady gave her given name and then her Purple Hat name. Peggy Sanders gave the birthday list: only one, Sandy Wyman and we sang the ‘’Happy Birthday’ song to her. Our leader, Charlotte Marley, reminded all that Friday was Veterans Day, an official holiday. She asked the question if we voted, since it was also voting day for our community.
The purple shoe project is obsolete and so we will start a new project at the first of the new year. One of our ladies, Doreen Messina is back in Florida.
Dec. 3 is the date for the Christmas party at the Snowmobile clubhouse in Oakfield. We will have spaghetti and meatballs and the cost for the dinner will be derived from the treasury. We are asked to please bring a wrapped gift for swapping (if you want to swap, if not, no gift). The gift should be $5 in value.
Since Thanksgiving is coming up, we have selected our gift for the Christmas good deed. Charlotte asked what we were thankful for—one piped up and said she was thankful to be alive, others were thankful for family and health and many other facts. The next question was our favorite Thanksgiving and some of us remember way back in the ‘30s and ‘40s with children and many members of their family during stormy weather.
Charlotte read two poems, short and to the point. Sandy also read a joke.Ladies attending were: Jackie Colella from Cary; Marsha Reed, Paula Wyman, Betty Wyman, Lois Downing; from Littleton, Kay Grass.
Also, Wannetta Townsend, Marie Gillotti, Charlotte Durr, Sandy Wyman; Peggy Sanders and Charlotte Marley from Smyrna.
Also, Delores Locke, Bernice Campbell, Mildred Gagnon, Evelyn Johnston, Elaine Barrett, and Evelyn Burpee. If you need information about the Purple Hat Society, you may call Charlotte Marley at 757-8483 or any of the other ladies. Come, enjoy and socialize and have a good time!
Take Off Pounds Sensibly ME 233, Houlton
by Lois Downing
Take Off Pounds Sensibly Chapter 0233 of Houlton met at the Aldergate building on High Street for its Friday, November 11 meeting. Because of the holiday, Veterans Day, it was a shorter meeting.
Eighteen TOPS ladies were weighed – 6 being KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly). Loser of the week was Joanne Scott.
Denise Clark, leader, greeted everyone. Barbara Troy is a volunteer for a greeter. Linda Cassidy was the recipient of the skinny dish. Denise read a letter from one of our representatives stating the increase in dues in 2012, from $26 to $28.
The meeting was spent talking over the workshop in Washburn the previous Saturday, which a goodly number of our chapter attended. Joyce Estey, in charge of our turkey contest, reviewed the rules. Charlotte Marley read a letter from Barbara Hogan on an event to be scheduled November 13. She distributed the letter, so all could read. The next meeting is November 18 at the same location. For information on the chapter, you may call Charlotte Marley at 757-8483 or Betty Ivey at 532-9653.
Weigh-in is every Friday at 8-8:45 each Friday, unless otherwise denoted (no weigh-in after that time to give the ladies time to figure their report). All are welcome.
