UMPI student-athletes gain national awards
PRESQUE ISLE — University of Maine Presque Isle sophomore forward Kyle Corrigan of Caribou and midfielder Lucas Bartlett of Bradley were named to the USCAA All-Academic team on Friday.
The National All-Academic Team awards are given to all sophomores, juniors and seniors student athletes that have excelled off the field by achieving a 3.5 GPA.
Corrigan, a business administration major with an accounting concentration, had a solid season on the field as well tying for the team lead in points with 13. Bartlett, who is majoring in athletic training, was a regular starter on coach Alan Gordon’s squad and had two assists on the year.
Four Owls’ women’s soccer players have been included on the 2011 USCAA All-Academic Team. Senior Jacquelyn Poulin of Washburn, Susan Lavertu of Madawaska, Taylor Ussery of La Vern, Calif. and Carolynn Tuck of Brewer represent UMPI on the list.
The Lady Owls finished the 2011 season 10-4 and ranked No. 10 in the USCAA coaches’ poll, narrowly missing out on an invitation to this year’s national tournament played last weekend in Asheville, N.C.
Maffei All-American
UMPI midfielder Craig Maffei of Readfield has been named an ‘Honorable Mention’ to the USCAA All-American team in an announcement released on Friday.
Maffei had a solid season for the Owls, leading the team in goals (6) and tying for the team lead in points (13). On Sept. 5, Maffei scored two goals leading UMPI to a 5-2 win at Unity College.
“Craig had an outstanding 4-year career here,” said Owls’ coach Alan Gordon, “I am pleased he got this recognition for what he accomplished for this, his senior season.”
