Former Chamber director enjoyed her work

To the editor:
For the past five years, I have had the great privilege of serving our community as the executive director of the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce. It is a role that I have absolutely loved. It truly is all about the people you serve, the members who so generously support events, the visitors and people who relocate here because we are the community they have always dreamed about living in. Imagine going to work every day and being able to describe all of the wonderful things that make us unique and special. I can honestly say that I have not taken it for granted, not for one day.
It has been such a privilege on so many levels. I have great admiration for all of our retail community who strive every day to meet the needs of their customers and in spite of the economy, keep going, thinking always of new ways to do business or to bring new products in. This past year has been particularly difficult for many of them and yet they persevere with a willing heart and smile.
It is because of our small business community that any single event is a success. Promoting them has been an easy task; they are unique, special and so willing to give to a community in need.
For my birthday this year a friend gave me a framed article from a 1957 Houlton Pioneer Times newspaper (yes, if you must know, that was the year I was born) and the title of the article was: “Houlton Chamber of Commerce … If the Chamber Won’t Do It … Who Will??” It was a perfect gift. The Chamber helps to provide an avenue for community events that allows the public to be totally involved to whatever level they wish to be. It provides the sense and reality that just by attending an event; you are helping the community as a whole, a business in particular. The sense of reunion at our bigger events is one that several communities around us have used as an example. We do it very well. The success of a Chamber of Commerce is due to the dedication of a board of directors who share a common vision for the community and who work tirelessly to see it to fruition. It is the support from the membership base that sees the value in what the Chamber does and helps to see it accomplished. It takes all of us to make it work.
So, from the bottom of my heart and most sincerely, thank you. The past five years has been a remarkable journey, an adventure that I wouldn’t trade for anything. I am excited to begin my new role in Community Development for the town of Houlton and look forward to working with you all.
