To the editor:
I greatly appreciated the letters published the last two weeks from Clare Kierstead and Joan Theriault. Both wonderful animal lovers and both cat lovers supreme. I often wish that I could have more scheduled personal time for this or that when I find myself overwhelmed with the animal work, the paperwork, the fundraising and the grant writing for Halfway Home Pet Rescue (HHPR). However, this mission is now such an intense part of my soul that I cannot give it up anymore than I can willingly chose to stop breathing. I thank God every day for the great volunteers who bring sanity, talent, kindness, support and love into my home and to these beautiful little creatures.
Like very young children, animals are unpredictable and their needs must be interpreted by their actions and sounds because words simply are not available. Therefore, one must be a daily presence in their life in order to read meaning into their behavior. Ask your local vet, who knows your pet better than you do.
The precious unwanted cats that come to HHPR would have no voice at all if it wasn’t for the volunteers at HHPR. There have been so many times when I have felt and heard a cat express sincere appreciation for the care we have given. It is in his purr or a touch of his head against ours. Our reward is the joy in our heart as the animal recovers from abuse or neglect and then leaves us, his halfway home, as a happy, healthy pet into a permanent home of his own.
It is good to know there are good people doing good work for the good of our community and the animals who need us.
