participates in Science Day
MAPLETON NEWS
by Jennifer Buzza
On Sunday, Oct. 23, members of the Aroostook Valley Dairy 4-H Club joined with millions of young people across the nation to become scientists for the day during the fourth annual 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD).
As part of 4-H NYSD, they participated in “Wired for Wind: The 2011 National Science Experiment,” which demonstrated how young people can implement alternatives to traditional energy production and have a positive impact on their communities and ecosystems.

THE AROOSTOOK VALLEY DAIRY 4-H CLUB members are shown here with the wind turbines they built as part of the fourth annual 4-H National Youth Science Day. After constructing the working model wind turbines, youth were able to test them with the NMCC computerized wind tunnels. Pictured are, from left, front row: Nathaniel Thompson, Makayla Shackett, Alyssa Shackett, Mariah Mink, Amanda Winslow, Clint Goheen, Brody Smith and Sidney Smith. Back row: Gene Cyr, Ellie Goheen, Paige O’Bar, Stephanie Winslow, Danielle Cyr and Savannah Smith.
To combat a national shortage of young people pursuing science college majors and occupations, and to enhance the nation’s contribution to the sciences, 4-H NYSD demonstrates that science, engineering, math and technology are fun and attainable options for college degrees and future careers. Currently, more than 5 million young people across the nation participate in 4-H science, engineering, technology and applied math yearlong programming. Through the “One Million New Scientists, One Million New Ideas” campaign, 4-H is working toward a bold goal to engage 1 million new young people in science, engineering, technology and applied math programs by 2013.
Here in Aroostook County, the group had the unique opportunity to bring the 4-H Club to the Northern Maine Community College Alternative Energy Learning Center. A special thank you to Wayne Kilcollins, NMCC instructor, for introducing us on the different types of wind power technologies and showing us the equipment in the lab used to teach students.
Participating in the Youth Science Day were Nathaniel Thompson, Makayla Shackett, Alyssa Shackett, Mariah Mink, Amanda Winslow, Clint Goheen, Brody Smith, Sidney Smith, Gene Cyr, Ellie Goheen, Paige O’Bar, Stephanie Winslow, Danielle Cyr and Savannah Smith.
