Angels on their shoulders

To the editor:

On Oct. 18, two 6-year-old first-grade girls who registered for bi-weekly activities at the Wintergreen Art Center on State Street in Presque Isle were “mistakenly” dropped off at the Recreation Center on Main Street.

In spite of advising and insisting to the bus driver that they were being dropped off at the wrong location, the girls were told to get off the bus and walk. Not knowing how to respond to the adult in charge, they hesitantly got off the bus.

Taking stock of their situation with fear, they decided to walk the half mile to Wintergreen. Through the grace of Angels and God, these two brave little girls decided to pretend they were sisters, hold hands and begin their journey north on Main Street toward Wintergreen. Remembering a big white building on the corner where Wintergreen was located, they crossed several intersections and the crosswalk at the corner of State and Main Streets. In spite of being scared, they continued on their journey: looking both ways and waiting for the traffic to stop. Fortunately as they arrived at the opposite corner of State and Main Streets, an employee of Wintergreen Arts came out of the building to see the two girls walking together, hand in hand. The employee ran to the girls and escorted them to their destination.

Although it has yet to be determined what prompted these girls to be dropped off at the wrong location and what actions will be taken to prevent it from happening again, we as grandparents of one of the girls are ever so thankful to the “Angels on their Shoulders” for watching over these precious little girls. We also are hopeful that this type of incident will never happen again and pray that SAD 1 will do whatever they can to ensure such.
