The Caribou High School Drama Club begins the 2011-12 season with its annual fundraiser today at Big Cheese Pizza in Caribou. “Big Cheese has been a devoted supporter of our club,” said Joe Zubrick, CHS drama coach, “they have always stepped up when we needed help.”
This year the club is already at work on an original script based on an incident with the women’s soccer team. “We’ve been very successful in developing our own material, especially for the regional competitions,” stated Zubrick. It gives the students a chance to participate in the entire process and helps them understand how theater happens.” According to Zubrick, the CHS Drama Club members hope to showcase the scene at the school’s annual Christmas Assembly.
Also on tap this season will be work with other student groups. Zubrick said, “Last year we were approached by Mapleton to work with the Destination Imagination students on improvisation. Improv is a big part of what we do and the students love to share with others.” CHS has been asked to work with Destination Imagination again this year.
“We’re also trying out a new program, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation “Poetry Out Loud,” added Zubrick. “Poetry Out Loud” is a competition that encourages the nation’s youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program also helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literary heritage. This event will allow students from CHS to compete and the winner will continue on to the state competition.
Returning CHS Drama Club members are Elyse Kiehn, Danae Elizabeth and Taylor Hartley and new members welcomed into the fold include Kirsten Haley, Alexis McCrossin and Autumn Kavin. Another new face this year is that of the assistant Drama Coach Ben Kamilewicz.
Zubrick reminds students that the drama club is always looking for new members as well.
“I’m looking forward to working with our students and especially Mr. Kamilewicz, “ said Zubrick. “This promises to be an exciting year. Please come out and support us, and help yourself to some ‘hot and ready’ pizza today at Big Cheese.”
