HAMMER TIME — UMPI runners took top honors in the Mariner Cross Country Invitational this past Saturday in Castine. The top three runners for both men and women were given three-pound sledgehammers as trophies. Shown here from left, front row: Emily Wright and Carly Langley. Back row: coach Chris Smith and Philip Boody.

In the women’s 5K race UMPI freshman Emily Wright of Mapleton was the individual champion crossing the finish line in 22:47. UMPI sophomore Carly Langley finished second, one minute behind Wright.

The Mariner Invitational featured its unique traditions of starting with a musket shot and ending with the victorious team cutting cake for the participants and fans on hand. In starting a new tradition, this year’s top three finishers were awarded sledgehammers for “putting the hammer down” on the course.
