Treats for Troops drive

PRESQUE ISLE — The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Phi Eta Sigma chapter will be collecting treats for the troops during their Treats for Troops drive beginning Oct. 24 and concluding Oct. 28.

Treats for Troops is a 100 percent nonprofit organization that ships out six tons of care packages every week to U.S. troops serving in remote war areas. The community is invited to take part in the drive and donate items or sign holiday cards. Tables for donations and signing will be set up in both Folsom Hall’s Whoos Hut from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Kelley Commons from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. FMI, www.treatsfortroops.info or call Jim Stepp at 768-9560.

Halloween in the Halls

 

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Student Activities Office welcomes area residents to bring their children enrolled in the 5th grade and under to trick or treat in UMPI’s Park and Merriman halls on Oct. 27 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. UMPI students will be decorating the halls for Halloween fun, so be sure to stop in. All children must be accompanied by an adult and parking will be available in the library parking lot. FMI, contact Student Activities Office, 768-9582.

Faculty Noon Seminar

 

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Faculty Noon Seminar Series will continue on Oct. 28 at 12:30 p.m. in the Normal Hall Faculty Lounge as Dr. Stuart R. Gelder presents crayfish worm research; a multi-disciplinary education. Dr. Gelder, an emeritus professor of biology at UMPI, is one of the world’s top researchers in the field of branchiobdellidan biology. He will discuss how art, sociology, culinary customs, applied science, foreign perspectives, law and law enforcement all play a part in biological research which has involved undergraduate students at UMPI over the last 25 plus years. Life Online

Members of the Student Senate group at the University of Maine at Presque Isle will present Life Online on Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center’s Owls Nest. The community is invited to attend and will learn about the serious issue of cyber bullying, how to recognize it and what to do about it.
