Newspaper receives awards

    NORTHPORT — The Houlton Pioneer Times was presented with 10 awards during the Maine Press Association’s annual banquet Saturday evening at the Point Lookout Resort.
    The MPA “Better Newspaper Contest” awards included:
    • Joseph Cyr earned first-place honors in the people photo category for his photo of a young boy in the sprinkle; and third place recognition in three divisions — editorial page, opinion column and news story. He also was an honorable mention in the scenic photo category.
    • Gloria Austin won second-place in the picture story category.
    • Former reporter Elna Seabrooks placed second in the business story category and third for a continuing story.
    • Dave Bates and Dave Russell won third-place honors in the advertising campaign category.
    The entire Pioneer Times staff was recognized with top honors in the Newspapers in Education special section division. Ad representatives Dave Bates and Dave Russell won third-place honors in the advertising campaign category.
