HOULTON — The Health Services Foundation recently received a $3,500 donation for its digital mammography campaign courtesy of the “Golf for a Cause” charity golf tournament held at the Houlton Community Golf Course.
Organized by Brittany Benn, the tournament featured 80 participants over a two-days. To aid in the cause, the golf course donated green fees for the tourney.
“Fundraising organizations like the Health Services Foundation generally speaking do not have their phones ringing off the hook like other types of organizations might, however, when it did ring the day Brittany Benn called and asked if we would like to have them raise funds for our digital mammography campaign with a ladies Golf Tournament, that was a great call to take,” Dulin said. “They took the ball, literally, and ran with it, they planned it, executed it and raised a significant amount of funds in the $3,500 that was presented to the Foundation for the cause.”

Dulin also expressed thanks to the Houlton Community Golf Course and the Houlton Ladies Golf Association for deciding to put on the “Golf for the Cause” event in support of the Foundation’s digital mammography campaign for Houlton Regional Hospital.
“It was a wonderful example of those who are so dedicated in our communities in support of this very special campaign,” she said. “Donors at all levels, along with this event have supported this fundraising effort by making pledges/grants/donations to this very worthy and vital healthcare need for our communities.”
This group of individuals, not only played a golf tournament, but also produced, and raffled off, a beautiful breast cancer wall hanging and purse, made by the “Cochrane Lake Sewing Gang.” Winners for the Golf for the Cause raffle were Heather Howland Kowalski (a purse) and Lynn Wallace from Gorham, who just recently reached the milestone of being a five-year breast cancer survivor. Wallace won a wall hanging.
“The powerful impact digital mammography will have on the early detection of breast cancer will significantly improve the lives of women, girls and even men, not only in local communities, but throughout the world for all those providing this service,” Dulin said.
One in eight women will have breast cancer in their lifetime and this great fundraising event for digital mammography equipment was the perfect opportunity not only to remind everyone of how fortunate our communities will be to have the latest technology to assist in the early detection of this terrible disease, but to demonstrate how incredibly fortunate we are to have the most amazing support of so many as well.
The Foundation will continue to raise funds for this project until the end of December.
