WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, ranking member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, recently offered her congratulations to the Caribou Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) for being recognized for its outstanding community emergency response team initiatives.
“I am proud of the Caribou first responders who answer calls to fires, damaging weather, or medical emergencies,” said Sen. Collins. “This team was the first on the scene this summer when Caribou sustained severe rain damage — directing traffic and helping victims.
“Under the leadership of Chief Woods the Caribou team designed and constructed a mobile feeding trailer which can be deployed anywhere in the county or state of Maine and set up to provide a hot meal to response or recovery crews. “This is a team of heroes and also good neighbors. For example, members volunteered for traffic and safety control for an August event to feed the hungry, among so many other good works. Their efforts make our community stronger,” she added.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced that the Caribou CERT will receive a 2011 Individual and Community Preparedness Award. The award recognizes the innovative practices and achievements of organizations and individuals that work to make communities safer, stronger, and better prepared to manage any emergency situation.
The Caribou Community Emergency Response Team received an honorable mention. Thirty members of the community are active in the Caribou CERT, led by Fire Chief Roy Woods.
