To the editor:
I believed it was impossible for anyone living in this world today having the ability to read could possibly miss the point of Mr. Peabody’s paper reported in the Pioneer Times last week. Your Page One story proved me wrong. How do I make it clear enough for the editor and reporter to understand?
Orient taxpayers are not angered by tax hikes. We believe taxes are necessary. The entire world knows about the ultimate existence of death and taxes. We fully expect to pay taxes. Taxes are a fact.
Mr. Peabody stated clearly backed with written proof that what we are angered by is the Orient town government’s mismanagement and illegal use of our hard earned tax dollars. We are angered by their crimes. Is that clear? Have I made myself clear? I will repeat because I suspect you and Mr. Cyr are unable to comprehend the English language.
We are not angered by taxes. We are angered by crimes committed using our tax dollars to their personal advantage. An example is the Board of Selectmen committing taxes at inadequately promoted, often unannounced “emergency” meetings.
We are upset because there was over $92,000 of taxpayers’ money overdrawn by the Town Clerk, Alicia Silkey with input from the Board of Selectmen with no reason given. We are upset because $30,000 was given former Select person Mary Beth Foley for a job she never completed and there are no plans to get the money back. We are upset because our tax books were manipulated to cover illegal maneuvering of our tax dollars. Those are just a few of many illegal activities that anger us.
Your mind-numbing reporting of Orient’s band of thieves has magnified our problem. Read again Mr. Peabody’s report, this time with your eyes open. You have made a laughing stock of media reporting.
