A haunting good time in Bridgewater
By Jann Bonkowski Votaw
There will be an adult Halloween Dance at the Bridgewater Historical Hall on Saturday Oct. 29, from 7-11 p.m. Enter the pumpkin decorating contest. Entry fee is $2 per pumpkin and the prize will be 50 of the pot, plus two extra regular 50/50 tickets. There will be a food basket raffle, and door prizes. A costume contest will take place with three categories, Best, Scariest, and Most Original. Refreshment will be available. Live music will be provided by “OUTSIDE IN”.
Last year only three people came out of costume. We are hoping to have 100 percent this year. If you come in costume there will a $6 fee per person, otherwise it will be $8 to get in. Some come on out and have a Spooktacular Time at the historical hall. We look forward to seeing you there.
Just a reminder, Oct. 27 will be the last of our Thursday night music program until the spring. We would like to thank everyone who helped make this event a success. All of the musicians volunteered their time and talent every week. They included, Bob Heller, Pam Green, Carole Trafford, Simon Clair, Hughie Grey, Eldon Lawrence, and Jann Votaw. Newcomer to the group was Charlie Disney. Other volunteers at the music nights were Gloria and Dave McCleary, Sue Shaw, Stephanie Willette, Doris Mason, Shirley Drew, and Sonny Votaw. What a great crew! A huge thank you to all of them. No event would happen without the help of the volunteers.
If you would like more information about our events or how to join the BHA call Jann at 425-7901. Thank you for your support.

Ricker Rumblings
by Lois Downing
Hello everyone! Beautiful Sunday day here in Maine. This paper goes everywhere – Arizona, Texas, and all around. I wanted everyone to know that we do have great weather in Maine!
Doris Hogan, a patient at Houlton Regional Hospital, is gaining in health. We all miss Doris. An official tells me that she will be home at Ricker soon. That’s good news.
As for me, I have been watching some of the old movies on TCM television channel. It reminds me of my brother Paul rushing to my mother’s in Baileyville (then Woodland at the time) to put on the correct channel, so she could watch Doris Day singing and all the dancing. My mother could do the Charleston in her day! Some of you readers will remember this dance.
Two of our ladies, Priscilla Brownlow and Dorothy Campbell, have been in and out of the local hospital before I could catch the word. Both are on the mend now and occupying their apartments.
I was informed today that my great nephew and his wife have a foster child. I admire couples who are so generous with their time and love who can do this wonderful deed.
Paul Armstrong can compose music among his other talents. He was occupying his time doing that on a recent Sunday.
The staff and the tenants started our Bingo games for the season last Wednesday. We had a few newcomers. Joyce Bryant brought some mints in a Halloween candy bowl and I “hogged” it. A policeman in Calais years ago used to buy pink mints in my father’s store, when he was on his way to work! Oh, those memories.
Don’t forget, every Friday afternoon, Bingo at 3 o’clock for the tenants. Our liaison, Charlene, is our caller and a good one too, I might add.
Colds are frequent in the community, I’m told. Be careful this time of the year changing from light clothes to heavier. I sure have to!
You know it is fall when you discover the outside swings are missing. The swings were put away for the winter until it is time to bring them out again.
Rita McDade of the B Road has been away recently. She is a volunteer at the local hospital and is probably home by this time.
Halloween is our next holiday, if you call it a holiday. Times have changed since “shelly out” days. Most of the kids who observe Halloween have fancy costumes, but not all. Latest news on Charlie Sheen is that he is going as Charlie Sheen! That’s funny!
Neighbors of Joyce Miller sure miss her. Hi Joyce! Maddie O’Donnell was a visitor in the office recently. Maddie is one of Charlene and Brian Henderson’s grandchildren. How Maddie has grown!
To all my readers who are interested in how Norma Bates is, she is doing fine. Norma is a delight to know and she loves everyone.
Charlene Henderson has been decorating in keeping with the upcoming holiday. Come on by and see our Halloween and scary articles.
A Bible verse is: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of wheat flour until the whole watch of dough was leavened.” (Luke 13:21).
Keep well, happy, and above all love!

The Whittier Congregational Church will be having its usual annual fall Rummage and Bake sale on Oct. 29, starting at 9 a.m. until noon. Their will be a wide variety of everything and, of course, lots of homemade goodies to choose from, including individual baskets filled with handmade and homemade goods.
The public is cordially invited to come and browse around and choose what takes their eye. Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Webb have recently spent several days in Bangor while Mrs. Webb consulted a doctor. While there they were guests of their niece and family, Greg and Darlene Kenny, Shawna and Troy. Harold Hoar is reported to be doing very well following surgery for a broken hip that he sustained in a fall. Sister, Sharman, who had been visiting, postponed her trip back to Colorado for a few days following his accident.
I have hung out two large sunflower heads for the birds to nibble on and I think a coon had other ideas as I found them both on the ground one morning, both really chewed on. I put them back and so far, they have stayed where I put them. The nuthatches and chickadees and now two woodpeckers are back in the cedar tree and busily devouring the peanut butter and lard mixture I put on the tree limbs. Havent seen any squirrels around yet but am sure they are out there somewhere waiting to get into everything. And only a few days ago was pleased to see the three deer back on my back lawn, busily grazing. It is a mother and two yearlings as she sometimes shows who is the boss when it comes to eating the apples I cut up for them. The three of them came up real close to the house and I was careful not to let them see me as it would probably spook them and they would dash off.
