Quilting group hoping to ‘make a difference’
WASHBURN NEWS
by Tomi Henderson
Make a Difference Day is Saturday, Oct. 22, this year. The quilting group called Stitchin’ and a Givin’ from the Washburn area is hosting a full day of quilting at the Washburn Trailrunners Clubhouse at Station Road in Washburn.
This is the second annual quilting day to celebrate Make a Difference Day, which is nationally celebrated. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and participants will be quilting memory quilts for Hospice of Aroostook. The quilts will be given to children 0-18 years old who have a parent or primary caregiver in the care of Hospice of Aroostook. The goal is to make 35 quilts that day.
Anyone who is willing to help is invited to take part. Materials are available for those people who don’t have any but would like to help. If a person doesn’t sew, but would like to help, please come. There are many tasks that need to be done such as cutting, tacking, pinning in addition to sewing.
This year, there will be a potluck lunch. People can come for all day or any segment of the day. If they are unable to come that day and would like to donate quilt squares, a quilt top or a finished quilt, it would be greatly appreciated. For more information, contact Millie Bennett at mbennett@mfx.net.
Rotary Club
On Oct. 5, the Rotary Club of Washburn welcomed Gina LeBlanc-Eggert and Dr. Norma Desjardins to their weekly meeting. Gina LeBlanc-Eggert is a member of the Presque Isle Rotary Club and is the co-chair of that club’s annual Special Project, which is the Apollonia Dental Clinic.
LeBlanc-Eggert introduced Dr. Desjardins as the evening’s speaker. Dr. Desjardins spoke about the clinic, which is slated to open early next year in Presque Isle. It will service low-income children, with aspirations of expanding services to other patients in the future. Donations can be made to this project during the upcoming Presque Isle Rotary Auction.
Salmon Brook Historical
The Salmon Brook Historical Society will be holding their next meeting on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m. at the Washburn Civic Center. A potluck supper will be followed by a business meeting. Please bring a service setting and either a main dish, dessert or rolls. For more information, contact Dennis Harris at 455-8279.
Please be aware that, except for special requests for tours, the museum is closed for the season.
Girl Scouts need a hand
Area Girl Scouts are asking for help in keeping the little hands of area children warm this coming winter. The Scouts are asking for new or gently-used mittens and gloves which will be given to elementary school students. They can be either store-bought or handmade, and all sizes will be needed.
Donation boxes will be available at the Washburn Town Office, the Washburn Memorial Library and at the mailbox area at Salmon Brook Meadow.
Thank you for your help in this project. For more information, contact Christie Cochran at 455-8034.

It will also be available at the Washburn Memorial Library during normal operating hours.
