100 Years Ago – Oct. 11, 1911
Aroostook Times
    New railing — The Selectmen have recently placed in position a convenient iron railing on the stone steps at Smith Bros. corner, which will be greatly appreciated by the public.
    Foundation — Contactor Chadwick who is building the new home for the Times, commenced by putting in the concrete wall.
    East Hodgdon — There will be a Pie Social at the Lincoln Schoolhouse on Thursday evening. If the weather is unfavorable, it will be held on Friday evening.
75 Years Ago – Oct. 8, 1936

    Celebration — Exactly 125 years ago, on Oct. 10, the First Congregational Church was organized. Included in the program will be special music by the choir under the direction of Mrs. Herschel Bull and a brief history by pastor, Rev. William G. Kirschbaum.
    Teacher salaries — Bertram Packard, commissioner of education reported that some teachers in the area will receive an average wage of $15 a week with the pay running as low as $10 a week for a school year of from 32 to 36 weeks.
    Elected president — Miss Eleanor Ross, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Linwood L. Ross, North Street, was elected president of the women’s division of the senior class at Colby College.
    Crackdown — Twenty-two persons from St. Francis to Silver Ridge have been brought before the court by the Sheriff’s Department on charges of illegal sale or possession of alcohol or both in the greatest cleanup of Aroostook County since repeal.
50 Years Ago – Oct. 12, 1961

    New projects — Speculation this week that two major construction projects may soon be under way in the Houlton business district; one will be the tearing down of the Houlton Theatre and the other the building of the IGA Foodliner just north of the North Street bridge.
    Local — Friends here of David Lawrence, son of Mr. and Mrs. Linwood Lawrence, will be pleased to learn that he has recently been chosen as a member of the 70 voice men’s glee club at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio.
    Hoop league — Interest in the formation of an Aroostook County Basketball League has been in the making for some five weeks.

    Lambert School — The 71-year-old school was the topic of discussion at the monthly meeting of the SAD 29 Directors. The school currently houses grades 5 and 6 with an enrollment of 147 pupils. It was previously the high school.

Modeling some of their outfits are from left, Jessica Lavway, Martha Putnam, Rebecca Gricus, Misty Gallop and Sarah McQuarrie. The students are from Grade 6 and 8.

    Airport — Runway repairs totaling $180,000 have been completed at Houlton International Airport.
    Staff dinner — The Southern Aroostook Community School Board hosted a dinner for their faculty on Sept. 18 in the school cafeteria. Board members, teachers and their guests enjoyed a meal prepared by the cafeteria staff. After dinner, the group listened to Tim Jennings, Vermont storyteller.
    Investment services — Richard Hammond of the F.A. Peabody Company has become a registered representative of Travelers Equities Sales, Inc.
