HOULTON, Maine — October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month at the Maliseet Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Program. The program serves individuals impacted by domestic and sexual violence and offers unconditional, confidential support, emergency shelter, transitional housing, safety planning, a 24-hour hotline, support groups, advocacy and accompaniment services as well as preventive education.
Throughout the month of October the Maliseet Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Program will be hosting events and reaching out to the community to raise awareness about a subject that touches many of our lives on a very personal level.
In early October, the program will be distributing feather ribbon pins, feather car magnets, candle lights, and pendants to the Maliseet Community to “Paint the Rez Purple,” the official color of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). Individuals who participate in the project are supporting victims as well as sending the message that they wish to live in a community free of domestic violence. Pins and magnets will be made available to the public as well.
On Oct 12, the annual Domestic Violence Vigil at the Maliseet Gymnasium starting at 6:30 p.m.. The program will feature words from a survivor of domestic violence, drumming by the Four Winds Drum Group, a candle-lighting ceremony, refreshments and more.
