Caribou firefighters responded to a structure fire on Lyndon Street on Sept. 28. The fire started outside near the enclosed porch area, resulting in minimal damage.

Although not clothed in turn-out gear, Fire Chief Roy Woods, with the driver of a fire truck, were the first responders at the scene. “The chief actually put the fire out this time,” stated Woods, “as we were first at the scene, I took the hose and got the fire out. It doesn’t often happen but there are times, including today, that the department has multiple calls come in at the same time. Today, within seconds of receiving the fire call, we had two separate ambulance crews called out to medical emergencies,” he added.

The fire, the result of smoking materials, originated outside the house and was confined to the porch area, causing little damage.

According to Chief Woods there were four units and 15 fire personnel at the scene for 54 minutes. Three-hundred gallons of water were used to douse the flames. There were no injuries sustained.

Mutual aid (both fire and EMS) was provided at the Caribou Fire Department by Presque Isle (pumper) and Limestone (tanker) fire departments.

Chief Woods stated that the property, owned by the Caribou Lioness Club, was insured and did have working smoke detectors in place. There were no installed sprinklers.

“It was a great, fast stop,” said Woods, “with small damage confined to the porch.”
