While many local soccer teams had last week off due to the harvest recess, the area’s Class B programs — Caribou and Presque Isle — both were in action against PVC foes.
The Vikings also had one of their planned contests postponed due to weather as their scheduled game against John Bapst Saturday was scrapped due to heavy rains and will instead now be played Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.
Caribou still had an important game against MDI last week, amassing their best offensive showing of the season, while PI was successful in matches against John Bapst and Washington Academy.
Caribou, now in second place in the Eastern Maine Class B standings despite remaining unbeaten, played at Foxcroft Academy yesterday and will host No. 1 Hermon in a key matchup Saturday before playing Fort Kent, also at home, Tuesday.
The No. 5 Wildcats played at Ellsworth yesterday and will also be on the road for a match at Old Town Saturday before returning home to take on Foxcroft Academy Monday afternoon.
Class D games matching Limestone-MSSM against Fort Fairfield and Ashland against Fort Kent were also held and completed the limited docket.
All the Class D squads will resume their post-harvest schedule in the coming days. Top-seeded Washburn will travel to St. Agatha to take on the Pioneers in a make-up game today at 3 p.m., No. 14 Ashland plays at Van Buren Friday, sixth-ranked Central Aroostook is at Southern Aroostook Friday and No. 2 Fort Fairfield hosts Fort Kent Saturday.
Tuesday’s schedule features three contests. CA and FF square off Tuesday, fifth-place Easton hosts East Grand and No. 16 Limestone-MSSM hosts Wisdom.
Summaries of games played last week are as follows:
Presque Isle 7, Washington Academy 0 – The Raiders are a new team on the Wildcats’ schedule and in the first regular-season matchup between the two schools Saturday, host Presque Isle proved to be too much to handle.
Kayla Richards had a hat trick and also contributed an assist, while Megan Ireland and Chandler Guerrette both registered a goal and an assist. Chelsea Nickerson and Karlee Bernier had the other goals for the 6-1-1 ‘Cats, while Emma Bartlett picked up an assist.
Meredith Stewart, who left the game with an injury midway through the second half, split goalie chores with Liza Buck and the two combined for two saves on four shots.
WA’s Jessie Hardey collected 15 saves on 22 shots.
Caribou 7, Mount Desert Island 1 – The Vikings had their best offensive showing of 2011 in Bar Harbor last Tuesday.
Olivia Sleeper and Sarah Doak knocked in a pair of goals each, while Jamie Martin, Kendra Stephens and Paige Small were the other goal scorers for the 8-0-1 Caribou squad. It was the first for Stephens in her varsity career. Martin also had an assist and goalkeeper Morgan Swan made two saves on three shots.
“I thought our offense really came out in this game,” said Caribou coach Todd Albert. “We created numerous scoring opportunities and hopefully we can continue to create and also finish those chances.
“If we can do that, we should be tough in these last couple weeks of the regular season,” he added.
Meghan Cantanese scored the Trojans’ lone goal off a Maureen Grubb assist. MDI goalkeeper Hannah Shaw made nine saves on 16 shots.
Fort Fairfield 5, Limestone-MSSM 1 – The Tigers continued their winning ways behind a hat trick by sophomore Logan Bubar.
Kylie Plourde and Emily Blaisdell scored a goal each for 7-3-1 Fort Fairfield. Goalkeeper Katy Donovan turned away four of eight shots.
For Limestone-MSSM, Danielle Pelkey scored the goal and Mariah Williams had the assist. Jordyn Hopkins collected five saves on 16 shots in goal for the Eagles, who dropped to 2-7-1.
