Ludlow — The school in District No.2 finished Friday on account of the teacher Miss Eva Warman, wishing to attend R.C.I.
Linneus — The first snowstorm of the season reached this vicinity, Friday evening, Sept. 29.
Island Falls — The sawmill of the Emerson Lumber Co. in Island Falls was burned at 5 o’clock Sunday morning.
Local — At the altar: “I, thee wed, with all my worldly goods endow.” Two years later: “More money?” “Where’s the dollar I gave you last week?”

Rotary Club — Houlton teachers were honored guests at a banquet hosted by the Rotary Club at the Northland Hotel. Guest speaker at the event was Sterling McFarlane, supervisor of education in New Brunswick who spoke on character building and its importance in education.
Enters college — John Ruth, who has been employed at the Feeley Drug Store the past four years and for the past six weeks with the Armour Co. here, left for Nyack Mission Institute Bible School. About 40 friends and relatives gave him a farewell party and he was presented with a trunk and a sum of money.
World Series — Thaddeus Grant and son Oscar left Monday for New York City to attend the World Series. They planned to visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Emmons Robinson and family in Dorchester, en route home. They went to Bangor by automobile, to Boston by the Streamline and to New York by airplane. On their return they will come to Boston by boat and the remainder of the way by train.

Harvest — Two days of heavy rain have held back the scheduled completion of Aroostook’s potato harvest. Heeding the request of many growers in the Houlton area, the local school committee voted to postpone the opening of schools in order to permit the farmers to dig the remaining 40 percent of their crops.

Church of the Good Shepherd — Just short of one year after starting, the Episcopal Church on Main Street building program nears completion. New for the 530-member parish are the north entrance, the Percy Cotton building and complete classroom facilities on the ground floor of Watson Hall.
WHOU — Bernard E. Esters sells his interest in WHOU to Keith L. Stine.
Dutch Elm disease — Elm trees treated with zinc chloride are healthy after a dozen years of resistance to Dutch Elm disease according to Dr. Games Slater, vice-president in charge of research and development, Owens-Corning Fiberglass Corp.

Bridgewater — Residents of this town, by a 199-60 margin have voted to withdraw from school Administrative District 42 in June of 1987.
Country Inn — Arthur and Gloria Brawn have purchased Bither’s Country Inn in Linneus. The couple has moved here from Bath and announced they will continue with the same hours of former owners, Ken and Cathy Bither.
New store — The grand opening of a new retail clothing store, Child’s World has been announced. The store located at 72 Main Street will be operated by Susan Nason.
Bridge — The Houlton Town Council voted unanimously to close the Lowrey Bridge temporarily due to its condition.
Hodgdon — Joining the SAD 70 faculty this year will be Ann Taylor, Kelly Sewell, David Carter, Carol Parson, Ruth Stewart, Sharon McAfee and Fred Sjoberg. Bill Dobbins will be the director of Special Education and Community Service.
