These items were donated by the Amish community in Easton. The event, held at Central Aroostook High School, raised about $28,000 for the Young family, following Herb Young’s involvement in an accident Sept. 3. Young continues to recover at Eastern Maine Medical Center.

YOUNG FUNDRAISER — Caitlyn Harris was just one of the many helpers at the Herb and Gail Young benefit supper and auction. There were over 500 meals served and hundreds of items auctioned in both the silent and live auctions. About $28,000 was raised during the evening. Many thanks to all who helped — from the planning to the cleanup. It was a wonderful show of support.

With a snip of her scissors, Sandy Harris made short work of Stuart Craig’s long ponytail — that he had spent three years growing. Stuart put up a challenge and agreed to have it cut if at least $2,000 was raised for the Young family of Mars Hill. With the challenge total coming in at $3,200, he sat down in the “barbers chair” at the end of the Saturday fundraiser. His hair will be donated to Locks of Love. Stuart received a certificate thanking him for that donation also.

Not to be left out, Carlton Craig agreed to have his head completely shaved following his older brother’s haircut. He had planned ahead and brought a hat with him to wear home. Both haircuts took place as part of a fundraiser for the Herb Young family Saturday in Mars Hill.

Rosalie said that Carlton could sleep on her sofa if Carlton’s wife was very upset over his haircut! Thanks go to both Stuart and Carlton for their donation for the cause.

ALEX’S LEMONADE — Winner of the basket raffled during the Alex’s Lemonade Stand fundraiser hosted by Jessica and Cathy Cropley of Mars Hill on Sept. 17 was Hadley McLean, of Presque Isle. Hadley, a cancer survivor herself, was happy to lend her support for this organization that raised money for pediatric cancer research. Jessica Cropley and Cathy Cropley, seated from left, set up their Alex’s Lemonade Stand for the eighth year at the Mars Hill IGA to raise funds for pediatric cancer research. Hadley McLean is pictured purchasing lemonade from them. Hadley came down with her mom to support this worthy cause.

Herb Young is still recovering at Eastern Maine Medical Center after being injured in an accident Sept. 3. The money will be used to cover family expenses, such as travel to and from the hospital. Over 500 meals were served and dozens of items were up for bid during the auction that followed dinner. All activities were held in the Central Aroostook High School Gym, with dozens turning out to show support for the Youngs.

McLean wins raffle

As part of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Cathy and Jessica Cropley hosted an Alex’s Lemonade Stand on Sept. 17. The national charity was created by Alexandra “Alex” Scott, a Pennsylvania cancer victim who started her own stand at age 4 to raise money for pediatric cancer research but never lived to see the charity reach their first million dollars in 2008. Since Alex’s death, her family has created the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and raised over $40 million to date.

One of this year’s national sponsors to ALSF is Strawberry Shortcake, so in addition to traditional lemonade, the Cropley stand offered strawberry lemonade which was a big hit by those who tried it. Added to the lemonade, a basket was raffled off which contained the story of Alex, the DVD “Lemonade Mouth” by Disney, a 3-pack DVD set of Strawberry Shortcake movies, a container of Country Time Lemonade — another national sponsor — and a container of fresh strawberries.

The winner of this year’s raffle was Hadley McLean from Presque Isle, a cancer patient herself. Hadley and her family made a special trip to Mars Hill just to visit and donate to Alex’s Lemonade Stand. This year the Mars Hill stand raised $304.
