Donations sought for Harvest Party

EASTON NEWS

by Debbie Smith

The annual Harvest Party will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, from 2-4 p.m.

If anyone has Happy Meal-type toys they would like to get rid of, we could use them as prizes in a number of games we will have there. Donations of candy for the party are welcome as well. Admission to this event will be a can of soup to be donated to the Friends Helping Friends Food Pantry.

Christmas Bazaar

The Christmas Bazaar will be held in December. Children will be able to purchase gifts for $1 and have them wrapped. Gift items are needed (new or gently used) as well as wrapping paper, gift tags and bows. If people are cleaning over the harvest break, please think of the EPCO if there are items you no longer need. Surely someone thinks your junk is wonderful.

The Easton FFA went to the Big E. The team members were: Harvey Brown, Logan Sutherland, Jessica Lawrence, Amanda Dayringer, Cody Embelton, Carter Mazerolle, Sydnee Waters, Brandon Hosford, Clay Plourde, Raven Plourde and Toria Tarbox. The chaperones that went were Kevin Marquis and Julie Brown.

Friday morning they visited the Department of Education. Commissioner Bowen was busy with meetings. They visited the Governor’s Office but he was busy with meetings as well.

The Capital Building was toured and they visited the House and State chambers as well as the Appropriation Commission’s Room where we left a note for Rep. Tyler Clark.

The group visited the Maine State Archives and were given a tour of the storage sites of the state’s most precious documents. They were shown an original copy of the Declaration of Independence, which was sent to each community in the colonies. Participants also had a chance to see and touch the original copy of the Maine State Constitution and also had a group photo taken with the document. Very few people, let alone students, are ever afforded this privilege.

On Saturday morning while the business management team competed, the other students visited the Springfield museums. The students visited a Dr. Seuss display, as well as the science, fine arts and Springfield History museums. They also had the opportunity to tour the Christ Church Cathedral. This stone building features ornate carved panels from the finest German craftsmen, as well as beautiful stained glass windows. The Cathedral also features a huge pipe organ. When the lowest bass notes are played, the stone structure vibrates.

On Saturday noon, the group enjoyed a semi-formal meal at the Olive Garden. Saturday afternoon we all visited the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. We were surprised to see the “Extreme Makeover Home Edition” bus in the parking lot when we arrived. The group had a few photos taken with the bus. An episode of the show was being filmed in Springfield.

Saturday evening participants attended the Eastern State Exhibition and visited many of the state pavilions and other exhibitions.

Unfortunately, Sunday they had to come home. It was a long ride home but everyone had fun.
