Lots to do this time of year in Star City

IN THE CITY

by James A. Bennett

The city is a very busy place this time of year. I would like to take a few minutes to bring you up to speed on just a few of the very exciting things that are happening in the city.

2010 Annual Report: Printed copies of the 2010 Annual Report are now available at City Hall and the Turner Memorial Library. An electronic version is available on the city’s website at http://www.presqueisle.govoffice2.com/ This report offers a comprehensive look at the city’s progress in 2010 highlighting some of the improvements and accomplishments during the past year. We hope you enjoy reading through Presque Isle’s year in review.

Community Center Task Force (CCTF): The CCTF has been meeting regularly to discuss the proposed new Community Center. The committee has completed a thorough review of the original design plans, the recommended site location and projected project finances. Committee members will present their findings in a final report to the City Council. The presentation will occur in workshop format on Monday, October 3rd at 4:30 p.m. at City Hall.

Library Grand-Reopening: You are cordially invited to a Grand-Reopening of the expanded Turner Memorial Library, to include a dedication of the Robert & Hope Akeley Memorial Wing. We will be featuring an art show with work created by Raphael Gribetz. Come and visit the library for tours, children’s activities and more! Join us on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 3 to 6 p.m.

2012 Budget Season: Yes, it’s that time of year again! The 2012 budget season is under way and city staff are working diligently to be sure that taxpayer dollars are spent in the most cost effective way possible. I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all residents who visited with me at Tim Hortons on Saturday, Sept. 10th to share their thoughts about the 2012 budget.

Writer Margaret Mead once said‚ “never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed it’s the only thing that ever has.” I value citizen feedback and will work with a renewed zeal in pursuit of this community’s desires. I will do so with transparent and ethical leadership that respects each and every dollar we are entrusted with.
