Kiwanis Club meets

The Easton Kiwanis Club met on Tuesday, Sept. 6, for their regular business meeting with 10 members and nine guests. The guests were all members of the “Hands and Feet” ministry program from the Easton Wesleyan Church, under the direction of Pastor Vaughn Martin.

After the pizza supper with cookies for dessert, the Hands and Feet ministry put on a very enjoyable show. Some of the actors had been with the group for only two weeks but it was so well done.

In a short time, on Sept. 30, the group will be traveling to Springfield, Mass., for a time of learning puppetry, magic tricks, ventriloquism and competition. If they make “gold” in competition, they can go on to Chicago to compete. Past groups have gone to Chicago five times but only competed once.

After the show, with no other business to conduct, the meeting was adjourned. Mike and Loris Allen, Irene DaFonte, Herbert Demerchant, Bernard Hussey, Barbara Blackstone and Clair and Eldora Carter were in attendance from the Kiwanis members. Those from the Wesleyan Church were: Peggy Arnett, Caitlyn Monroe, Sara Gilman, Toria Tarbox, Alana Tarbox, Elise Allen, Melissa Corbin, Bonnie Dewitt and Pastor Vaughn Martin, who is also a Kiwanis member.

Visiting

Eldora and Clair Carter recently returned home from a five-day visit over Labor Day with their sons: Dana and family in Scarborough, Wendell and Doreen in Saco, and Mike and Beth in Portland. On the way down they spent the night with Eldora’s brother.

Happy Days Club

The Easton Happy Days Club met for their first regular meeting on Thursday, Sept. 8, with 14 members and a guest speaker to enjoy the delicious noontime meal.

Stewart White, a member of the TAMC Cardiac Rehab Program, spoke to the Easton Happy Days Club during their regular meeting on Sept. 8.

After the meal, guest speaker Stuart White, a member of the Cardiology Rehab Department at TAMC, spoke to the group about recovery after a heart attack. He talked about how one can be rehabilitated afterward with exercise and diet. Those who have had a heart attack should go to rehab three days a week at least. They should check and see if their insurance covers it.

He said the key is exercise. He passed out material on fiber, discount papers, Heart Truth for Women and healthy eating. He asked for questions and the group felt well-informed.

Stuart spoke some on CPR but said it wasn’t his expertise and that 9-1-1 should be called as soon as possible and then use compression. He said mouth-to-mouth wasn’t used much now. He also said that the American Heart Association has a spot on the Internet for more information and 9-1-1 could also talk you through what to do.

After the speaker left, President Nina Trask called the meeting to order with the salute to the flag and the singing of “God Bless America,” with Elizabeth Martin at the piano. Ida Doak called the roll call with members Nina Trask, Elizabeth Martin, Eldora Carter, Marie Hewitt, Helen King, Lindy Fowler, Rogena Thomas, Margery Niblett, Barbara Bonville, Vera Cullins, Jean Ann Ames, Hollis Hull, Eldora Carter, Ida Doak —secretary, and Helen King read the minutes of the last meeting, taken in Eldora Carter’s absence.

Treasurer Ida Doak reported that she had paid Arlene Ladner for cards that she had sent, $10 to Child Evangelism Fellowship of Northern Maine in memory of past member, Lois Ladner. A thank-you card was read from that fellowship by President Nina Trask. Ida also brought a few other items for the rec room kitchen.

There was a discussion about attending the Northern Maine Council on Aging to be held on Sept. 19 in Ashland at the VFW Hall beginning at 10:30 a.m. No one was sure about going so Nina said to call her if anyone decides they would like to go. The president brought up the trip the group would be taking on Oct. 13 to Grammy’s restaurant in Linneus and the tour of Smith & Wesson. This is a trip with the Rec Department and participants pay for his/her own meal. She also asked if everyone had their passport card for the trip the senior citizens are taking to Grand Falls on Sept. 29. All Easton senior citizens are welcome on the trip. Call Nina Trask for more information at 488-6190.

Pattee Page 187 meets

The Pattee Page Unit 187 American Legion Auxiliary met at the home of Jean Kneeland on Monday, Sept. 12, with six members and two working on the membership. The meeting was opened with prayer by Chaplain Freda Dionne, followed by a moment of silence in honor of those killed in war.

The salute to the flag and the reading of the Auxiliary Purpose was then carried out. Anita Michaud brought in her papers for membership and she was presented with the Auxiliary pin by President Eldora Carter.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Jean Kneeland and accepted as read. The treasurer’s report was given by Treasurer Marjorie Corey showing that finances were very low. A letter was read from the IRS by the president which was quite confusing. The treasurer volunteered to take it to someone who could explain it to her. It was noted to take the Auxiliary Charter material (pictures) to the Odd Fellow’s Hall where Bernard Hussey will put them with the Legion material removed from the Legion Hall.

There was much discussion about how to raise finances to be able to carry out the projects of the Auxiliary. It was voted to hold a yard sale on Oct. 14 and 15, with the president to find a place to hold it. The chaplain volunteered to print up a list of items that they could count in their homes and pay a small price for them to bring a little more cash.

Helen Palmer volunteered her time and expertise to take pictures of Legionnaires and Auxiliary members to put in albums for posterity. This she would do for free. The president plans to contact the commander about their plans. A few other ideas on fund-raising were floated around for the future.

The chaplain closed the meeting with prayer. The next meeting will be the first Monday in Oct. 3, at the home of President Eldora Carter, beginning at 1 p.m. Those present were Eldora Carter, Margery Corey, Arlene Mullen, Freda Dionne, Anita Michaud, Jean Kneeland, Helen Palmer and Ann Morehead of Presque Isle, who are in the process of transferring to the Pattee Page Unit 187.
