Paddle, Pedal, Plod Triathlon

The annual triathlon is set to take place Saturday at Brent Jepson’s camp at Madawaska Lake. The rain date will be Sunday.

The timed event, which begins at 9 a.m., includes a three-mile paddle, a 12-mile bike ride and a four-mile run. Both individuals and two- to three-person teams can compete.

Since there are no trophies, ribbons or T-shirts, there is no cost for the event. Donations to the Spokes For Hope cancer awareness/fundraising bicycle ride from Fort Kent to Kittery, which took place over Labor Day weekend, will be accepted. This year, funds are being raised for the Central Aroostook area grassroots C.A.N.C.E.R. organization (Caring Area Neighbors for Cancer Education and Recover) and the statewide Dempsey Challenge. Participants should bring your own kayaks, canoes, vests, paddles, bikes and sneakers. Those with spare boats are asked to bring them along for participants who need them.

Those of any age are welcome, but everyone will be personally responsible for their own well being and safety, whether during the paddle, bike ride, or run. There will be no supervison or monitoring of minors on the water or roads.

A pot-luck barbecue picnic will wrap up the day. Bring what you like to eat and stay as long as you’d like after.

Directions to Jepson’s camp: cross the river/bridge on Route 161 at the bottom of the hill before Madawaska Lake. Take the second left off Route 161 and then an immediate left onto the South Shore Road, then the fourth driveway in.
