Events to mark anniversary

Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorists attacks in our nation. The following are some of the events planned in southern Aroostook County to commemorate the event.
    • The Houlton Wesleyan Church will hold special ceremony starting at 10:30 a.m. at its 18 Kelleran St. church. Members of the Houlton Police Department and other organizations have been invited to attend this service. All are welcome.
    • St. Mary’s Catholic Church on 110 Military St. in Houlton will hold a “Prayer for Peace” at 3 p.m. Sunday. All are welcome.
    • The Rev. Virginia Urbanek will lead a candlelight service of prayer and remembrance Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at the Church of the Good Shepherd on 116 Main St. All are welcome.
    • Hodgdon High School will conduct several special activities on Friday, Sept. 9 at the school. According to Interim High School Principal Mary Harbison, students will gather in the high school gymnasium at 8:46 a.m. (the time that the first plane struck the World Trade Center). The high school band will perform the “Star Spangled Banner.” Ribbons will also be placed on trees in the area in memory of 9-11. Every high school student is also drafting a letter to a soldier currently serving in the military.
    • The Unitarian Society of Houlton, 61 Military St., will have a “Moment of National Reflection,” with the Rev. David Hutchinson during Sunday’s 10 a.m. worship service.
    • St. Agnes Catholic Church in Island Falls and St Paul’s Catholic Church in Patten will hold “Prayer for Peace” messages during 3 p.m. ceremonies at the two churches.
