Ricker Rumblngs
by Lois Downing
Hello everyone. The Irene hurricane scare is behind us. We made out pretty good, didn’t we? Many people were killed for various reasons and the damage of property was enormous. We are blessed, only a few high winds and lots of rain. Thank you, Lord.
We are happy to see a new building going up further up on Military Street, almost across from St. Mary of the Visitation Church. I’m told it is going to be a County Yankee store. It will be larger and better and maybe more parking spaces.
We are having a good time on Wednesday afternoons when two young ladies entertain us in the community room. The first week we made stir fry, this past week lasagna and next week is a Mexican feast. We all went home with prizes after a quiz on old and new food prices. That was fun. You would not believe the changes in food prices over the years. Bananas were 19c per pound, lettuce was 10 per head, bacon was 41c per pound, bread was 39c in 1975. Tenants attending are Priscilla Brownlow, Shirley Nason, Joyce Miller, Joyce Bryant, Connie Barry, Nacie Fowler, Gloria Hall , Sylvia Thompson, and Lois Downing. Come and join us next week, bring a friend and share the fun. It is operated by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension program.
Dale Devoe has a new cat, a black one. She has named it “Bug.” I still have the extra envelopes and scrap paper. Just call me for this, 532-2125. We were saddened by the death of Arlene Friel, who lived on the third floor and was one of the original tenants when Ricker Plaza opened. Arlene will no longer be seen in the yard or community room. Her family and friends will miss her, especially daughters Peggy Robinson and Maureen Friel, who cared for her while she was ill. God bless and rest peacefully.
Norma Bates’ son and his wife have arrived in Houlton from Texas. They sold their home there and relocated here. That makes Norma and family very happy. Kenneth and his wife are living in an apartment on Park Street and are very happy there. They are frequent visitors of Norma.
This past week has been a beautiful one with temperatures in the high 70s. In the evening there is a nip in the air of fall. My wish is that you all had a wonderful Labor Day weekend, spent with family and friends, without mishap. Paul Armstrong had eye surgery this past week and has been wearing a bandaged eye. He is doing well. Some of my friends have lost all their tomatoes by a blight. They were big and red but diseased. Too bad.
Leannna Nason was an overnight visitor of her aunt, Shirley Nason. Jeff Thibodeau was in town on Friday and in the office from Portland. There are moments during the day that are undeniably touched by angels. Have a wonderful week.
