WASHBURN — After a three-year hiatus, the Car, Truck and Tractor Show returned to Washburn last year, with the latest event held during the August Festival on Saturday, Aug. 20. In 2010, Wade Thurston of Presque Isle took the lead and has been successful due to the generosity of sponsors and car show enthusiasts.

This year’s car show was a part of the town’s 150th birthday celebration. In honor of this milestone, the class of Corvettes was dedicated in memory of David James Lyon, formerly a native of Perham. Lyon died on Dec. 24, 2010, after a two-and-a-half-year battle with cancer. Lyon’s experience in education was diverse, however the majority of his 40-plus years in education were as superintendent of schools in SAD 45 (Washburn, Perham and Wade).

Thanks go to the many businesses and individuals who sponsored the trophies for the show and other show-related costs.

Thurston said he is very pleased with the turnout and is looking ahead to next year’s car show. He said he’d like to see the car show grow.

“Originally, there were 16 classes in the car show. However, due to lack of funding, I’ve had to shrink things back to 10 classes. In order for the car show to grow, I need more funding and more participation. If classes are sponsored and no entrants enter, I lose the sponsor for next year. So, it’s really important that we all participate,” said Thurston.

Thurston said input would help.

“Maybe you want different classes. I need help with sponsorships to make the show bigger and better for next year,” he said.
