The temperatures may still indicate summertime conditions, but the fall sports season is officially under way for boys and girls soccer teams in southern Aroostook County. And by early accounts, a number of local soccer squads could be poised to make some noise on the pitch this season.
The following is a recap of games played through Monday, Aug. 29.
Girls soccer action
Fort Kent 1, Houlton 0 — At Houlton Friday, the host Shiretowners (0-1-1) played solidly for 73 minutes, keeping Fort Kent off the scoreboard. A goal by Fort Kent’s Sam Carapellucci, with 7:13 to play, changed things quickly for the Shires.
Houlton coach Tim Tweedie pulled his starting goalie — Marina Cameron — and sent her out to the front line, in the hopes of generating enough offense to score the game-tying goal. That scenario did not play out, however, as the Warriors (1-2) won their first game of the young season.
Fort Kent outshot the Shires 14-6 in the game and held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Cameron and backup keeper Tanika Toby combined for seven saves, while Alexa Pelletier had four saves in net for the Warriors.
Houlton 2, Madawaska 2 — At Madawaska Aug. 24, the Shires and Owls (1-1-1) played to a 2-2 tie in the season-opener for Houlton. Amanda Fogarty and Alana Pratt each scored a goal for Houlton. The Shires held a 2-1 lead over Madawaska before Nicole Cyr scored on a penalty kick with 54 seconds left in regulation. Cyr scored the Owls’ first goal, assisted by Meagan Ouellette.
Houlton goalie Cameron had seven saves on 14 shots, while Amanda Nadeau rejected 14 of 25 shots faced.
Limestone-MSSM 7, Hodgdon 0— At Hodgdon Tuesday, Aug. 23, Amanda Allen scored three times, with Kennedi Smith scoring twice, while Stephanie Leighton added a goal and assist. Danielle Pelkey also had a goal. Notching assists for the Eagles were Mariah Williams and Ellyzabeth Bencivenga. Goalie Karen Page stopped eight of 10 shots.

Houlton 2, Fort Kent 1 — At Houlton Friday, the Shires got their first win of the year thanks to a pair of solo goals by Jimmy Fitzpatrick and Nick Guiod. Fitzpatrick gave the Shires a quick 1-0 lead as he converted on a breakaway with 34:50 to play in the first half.
Guiod put Houlton on top 2-0 on another breakaway as he lofted a shot over the head of Fort Kent goalie Cody Plourde with 13:47 to play in the first half.
