Ludlow — Mrs. Andrew Whitehead and Mrs. Beadle Currie of Houlton visited with Mrs. P.M. Mooers recently.
Houlton — The Dunn Furniture Company has erected on their new brick block, a tall flagstaff and have thrown to the breezes a very toasty and attractive banner, bearing the words, “The Dunn Furniture Co.”
Local — A large number of people were in Houlton, Sunday, coming from Bangor and other places on the excursion to the Littleton camp meeting.
Thanksgiving — Due to there being five Thursdays rather than four in the month of November this year, President Taft has decided to designate Thursday, November 30 as Thanksgiving day this year.

Picking wage — Farmers were passed cards upon which they stated the picking wage which they felt should be paid this year. It was decided that the standard wage should be 5 and one-half cents per barrel with board and 7 cents per barrel without accomodations.
Actress — Mrs. Florence O’Rourke and her daughter Miss Jeane O’Rourke of Hollywood, Calif. were guests for several days during the past week at the home of William Yerxa, Military Street, this being Mrs. O’Rourke’s first visit in 40 years. She has been a resident of Hollywood for 18 years where her daughter, whose stage name is Jean Lorraine has played extra parts in pictures.
New employee — Norman Hurd, who has been employed in a drug store in Blue Hill has accepted a position at the Feeley Drug Store here in town.
Guests — Roger Lincoln and two friends, Walter Gay, Jr. and Fred Watts, who have been spending a week in town, guests of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.B. Lincoln, West Street and at the Lincoln cottage at Grand Lake have returned to Providence, R.I.

Houlton — The tax rate drops two mills to 55, as valuation increases.
Hodgdon — Principal Joseph McBrine announced the following new staff members; Phil Chase Jr., Terrance McKay, Gertrude Vail, Marguerite Whited, Donald Oliver, Alan Robinson and Virginia Sherman.
Local — Jimmy Grant, son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Grant, returned Sunday from Schroon Lake, N.Y. where he spent a week. Jimmy was honored there when chosen as Camper of the Week, Best Basketball Player of the Week and also received two other athletic awards.
Collegians — Gilbert Chapman, playing manager of the Houlton Collegians accepted the Morneault Maine-New Brunswick League trophy won by the baseball team this past week. The trophy will remain with the Houlton group permanently due to winning the title for the third time. Previous titles were won in 1952 and ’53. Other members are Steve Rich, Woody Dunphy, Gene Kilpatrick, Harry Niles, Terry Ordway, Vaughn Hersey, Lin Hersey, Charles Ashe, Jerry Duffy, Al Gardiner, Peter Webb, Phil Faulkner and James Caldwell, bat boy.

Rain— Residents of the Houlton area awoke Saturday to find upwards of five inches of rain had fallen during the early morning hours with varying amounts of damage done to roads and considerable damage occurring in a number of basements of both private homes and businesses.
SAD 29 — Schools in SAD 29 will open with an anticipated enrollment of 1,546 reported Supt. William McDonnell.
Tax Rate — The Houlton Town Council accepted a 1986 tax rate of 26 mills during their regular meeting.
Up With People — The international cast of Up With People will bring their all new hit show “Best of the Future” to Houlton High School on Aug. 23.
Jr. Miss — Twelve candidates will vie for the title of Houlton Jr. Miss. They are Maria Beaulieu, Deanna Brennan, Amy Hutchinson, Beth Jordan, Sonya Lane, Elizabeth Leighton, Tracey Powers, Jennifer Prince, Deborah Saunders, Susannah Sylvester, Ellen Thompson and Jody York.
