Speaker shares Peace Corps experience

The Probus Club of Central Aroostook held its monthly meeting on July 21 at NMCC. President Karen Sweeney welcomed everyone and then turned the chair over to Mel Fitzherbert, program chairman, who introduced Glyn Lovely, the guest speaker for the morning.

Mr. Lovely spoke about his work with the Peace Corps in Nigeria, Africa, from 1964-1967. He gave us some background on the Peace Corps which was organized in l960. Members of the organization had volunteers in 130 countries worldwide initially but only 70 countries are  now served. The Peace Corps Volunteers are in these countries by invitation only.

Mr. Lovely told Probus members of his personal experiences as a teacher of English in the higher grades in school and also explained the living conditions, food and culture of the country.

His later career was with the Maine Department of Human Services in several parts of the state.

Mel presented Glyn with a certificate of appreciation from  the Probus Club.

The meeting was called to order and Pearl Carmichael read two poems about getting older and friendships.

Paul Lynch explained the application process for the scholarship that Probus Club awards to a student entering NMCC; then Meta Giggey read a thank-you card from Katherine Roberts, the 2011 recipient of this $500 scholarship.

The nominating committee announced the officers for the 2011-12 year: President Karen Sweeney, Vice President Helen McConnell, Secretary Meta Giggey, Treasurers Gerry Gallagher and Richard Barker, and Program Chairman Mel Fitzherbert.

Dave Maxcy told us about his life growing up on the Maine Coast and his career in teaching and farming. He also was a track coach and an avid runner himself.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Probus Club of Central Aroostook meets at 10 a.m. on the third Thursday of every month at Northern Maine Community College. We welcome new members; if you are interested in joining, contact one of the officers or any member of the club.
