Youth football season to start next week; boosters elect new officers

The Houlton Football Booster Club Board of Directors held its elections and Leisa DeVoe will serve as president; Jill Forest, vice president and Theresa Bragan, secretary/treasurer for the upcoming 2011 season. Committee chairmanships are being assigned. The board invites any interested person to volunteer time or resources to their work.
The board is looking forward to another successful year in its attempt to promote this youth activity with more than 85 players in three age divisions.
The Knights have enjoyed a successful program for over five years, capturing the league title three times — including back-to-back championships in 2009 and 2010.
Football season opens up for the high school varsity Knights on Monday, Aug. 1. The first practice of the 2011 campaign starts at 5 p.m. at the Maliseet Field. Candidates are asked to wear sneakers or cleats and bring drinking water. Players are asked to prepare for a conditioning program during the first week of practice.

The junior high team will begin practice on Monday, Aug. 15 at 5 p.m. at the Maliseet Field Complex. There are several openings for candidates in the junior high division.

This year the peewee team, in addition to its regular Aroostook Football League schedule, is working on games with Millinocket and Lincoln. It is hoped that this entry will introduce the team to 11-man football.
